Than i had a 30 gallon drum on the ground with about 15 feet of hose running into that from the electric pump. [links]

I am looking for advice from you all on what else I should do/look out for/expect when trying to start this after 3 years of sitting. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Any guides on forum or online that are useful? I did brief search to no avail. here

I have an automotive background, but limited boat background. Want to get the engine ready to use but shop has a 2 month backlog so I decided to do this myself. Not sure what all needs to be done.

I would pull the distributor and buy the tool that attaches to your drill to operate the oil pump until oil pressure is fully up. That is what I did to an engine that was laid up that long. Also, forget using the fuel that is already in the tank. Use an external tank. here

Change oil & filter
Replace drive belt
Replace hoses
Clean carb
Soak each piston with Marvels Mystery Oil
New spark plugs
New spark plug wires
Any other suggestions?

Hand rotate the engine a few times with spark plugs out before using the starter. here

What screw did you see leaking? If the screw is on the carb, and behind the air inlet, it could lead to a vacuum leak which may make starting a bit hard. Also, the plugs could make a difference, so let us know. here

The letter on the plug should be the heat range. You want to stay in the heat range spec'd by the manufacture in order to prevent internal engine damage and to allow the engine to run at it's peak. Each engine is designed to run on certain octane fuel and with a certain heat range plug. There is variation built into this to allow the engine to be more user friendly and to allow differences in parts and fuels, but the manufacture's specs should be followed as closely as possible.

I would go through the fuel system and check to make sure nothing is leaking. On some of these motors, if you don't have a good prime, they are a bear to start. Check under the cowl too, have someone squeeze the bulb to see if you can see any fuel spraying or leaking. Find your fuel filter, if your motor still has one built in, it may need to be changed. Check your fuel for water too, this can be done with a clear glass. Just pop the disconnect off of the motor, use a screwdriver to push in the ball if there is one, and have someone pump the bulb. Aim the fuel into a glass and fill it up a few inches. Let the fuel settle for a few seconds, it doesn't take long for the water to settle, and you will see a definite difference between the fuel and water while looking in from the side of the glass, the water will settle at the bottom of the glass and the fuel will stay on top of it. If you have water in your fuel, put in a fuel/water separator which also acts as another fuel filter. Spray some seafoam in your carbs and let it sit overnight, also, run some seafoam in the gas. Check your plugs, if they are dirty, clean them off with a wire brush and check the gap. When you put them back in, double check both connections of each wire to make sure your plug wires are fully connected. here

If nothing else works, I'd bring it back to the shop that changed out the choke and let them know that the engine has been acting up since they did the work. They may take a look at it for free for you, you never know till you ask.

If you go through everything and are still having the problem: Hook up a timing light and crank the motor over like normal, make sure the light flashes consistently while trying to start the motor. If it doesn't you have to figure out why, could be too low of a charge on the battery, bad coil, bad wires, bad ground. If your spark is weak while cranking, it may not start a good air/fuel mix, but will start on the ether. Also, pull your carbs and pull them apart and give them a good cleaning. If you have never done carb cleanings, the easiest way to do it is 1 step at a time, taking pictures of everything that you do. Then you can refer to the pictures when you are putting em back together, and write down how many times each screw turns for your mixture and idle screws, by this, I mean how many times they turn in until they seat, but don't tighten them down, you will damage them. Then while putting them back together, gently seat those same screws and then turn them back out the same amount of turns. here

If you are mulling over taking-up angling or boating as a hobby, do you think the outboard motor is for you? I certainly find it to be extremely versatile and easy to work with. I also feel quite comfortable doing the maintenance work myself.

Selecting the right shaft length is also vital since a short one means the propeller cannot adequately submerge. It is recommended that the center of the motor section is underwater at least 12 inches. [links]

A 12V battery is usually the power source for these motors, with larger ones requiring more batteries. Larger motors can use two, sometimes even three 12v batteries. Trolling motors are extremely popular for game fishing. [links]

To power an inflatable boat, and if you are looking for speed, get a 10-20hp outboard. However, there is a range of thrust options for different boat sizes. You can get anywhere from 18lbs to 112lbs of thrust. A trolling motor 30 lb thrust will usually be ample for a modest-sized boat. [links]

Trolling motors also provide an auxiliary power source, particularly to anglers that need maximum agility and maneuverability. [links]

Every fishing or boating enthusiast will tell you the sound of an outboard motor that comes to life is music to their ears. There are, however, times when you would prefer an engine that makes almost no noise at all. What I am alluding to is the trolling motor. [links]
