Hi Gary. Thanks for visiting the RV Repair Club site and the opportunity to assist with your surge protection question. Your Starcraft comes standard with a 30 amp distribution center and minimal surge protection through common circuit breakers and 12-volt fuses. This does not protect against low voltage as well, therefore I would recommend getting an aftermarket protector such as Surge Guard or Smart Surge from Progressive Dynamics.

Intermittent problems are a bitch. No two ways about it. here

This one kept me going for a couple of days. I’d just picked up a Data East Hook pinball and F1 was blown. The fuse is part of the +12 volt circuit and installed before the bridge rectifier (see Image 2). Ever hopeful, I popped a new fuse in, and it blew. After removing CN6 (the only connector with the 12 volt output from this circuit) and put in another fuse. It blew. [links]

If the fuse blows while you are playing the game, and always at the same point (i.e. – when a vertical up kicker should fire) you have a circuit problem. more

When dealing with vibration related problems you should wiggle wires, push down on IC’s that are in sockets and wiggle connectors while you are testing a section of the circuit. [links]

Although I know better, I ran a jumper from the transistor on the CPU that controls the kicker to ground without putting a 1K resistor inline*. If the kicker fired then I knew my problem was on the CPU board since I had already verified my 12 volts was good. And it did fire, but only once. After a little checking my 12 volts was gone again and F1 was blown.

FOLLOW the Kenwood Service Bulletin, regarding MRF-485 replacement (use proper Motorola color dot version). Use of Red, Orange, or Yellow hfe color rankings is recommend. These lower gain transistors work just fine and do not suffer from the circuit instability problem. If you are only able to obtain the high gain transistors you will need to modify the varistor/temperature compensation circuit on the final unit (X45-1400-00) by changing R16 from 1.2 Kohm to 2.2 Kohm. http://vss.pl/mods.dk/mods.php3-radi. ectid=1723.htm here

The original PA module circuit (early production runs) was designed for the low gain Hfe MRF-455 transistors . there are some suggested component changes (found on Internet regarding these changes) when using the high Hfe MRF-485 PA / MRF-422 driver transistor replacements.
The later Kenwood production runs --- appear to have sufficient changes for usage of higher Hfe replacements. [links]

1. Is the radio going into TX mode?
2. If so is there RF power from the RF unit to the final unit?
3. If power to the final is it an adequate level?

Balmar has combined recent technology advances to introduce a next generation battery monitor. The SG200 is quite simply the most accurate battery monitor available today. Balmar has combined the best features of its 1 st generation Smartgauge TM with many advantages of a shunt-based amp-hour counting system. Further, we’ve designed a device architecture which facilitates multiple Displays or multiple SmartShunts to be added to the network-allowing the boater to monitor multiple energy storage banks simultaneously from multiple locations.
