The Bible has some interesting ship stories. Here is a list of 9 Bible passages about boats. You will use them for the following Scripture game: Genesis 7:1, Exodus 2:3, Jonah 1:3, Luke 5:3, Matthew 13:2, Matthew 8:24, John 6:21, Acts 27:41 and Matthew 4:21-22.

There is something thrilling about being on a boat. Whether in a little canoe out on a quiet lake or on a sailboat out in the middle of the ocean, boating is a beautiful way to enjoy God’s creation.

The second chart that the children can see, should contain these 9 different captions:

To play the game, divide your children into 2 teams. Have a child from the first team “fish’ a boat out of the pool. He will look at the number on the boat and tell it to you. You will look on the first chart and see whether the child will read a verse or whether his ship has sunk. If his ship sunk, the play goes to the next team. If he is to read a verse, he does so from a Bible and then tries to pick the caption that matches the passage he just read. If successful, he gets 50 points for his team. The team with the most points wins! Happy sailing!

If you live anywhere near the Isle of Wight or happen to visit it, this is a brilliant book. It's not a particularly easy read and quite long, but it has ferries, a rescue helicopter, a bus, a lifeboat and a tugboat all playing their parts in the rescue of an oil tanker. We could point out the real landmarks to our son, and having been on the ferry he enjoyed it even more. It led to extensive role playing games "towing" any wiling adults with bits of string as he became the lifeboat rescuing the tanker and the tanker soon appeared in his bath time games as well. I have read to my son since he was born, and found some surprises along the way where books I might not think would appeal, have become firm favourites. All I can say is, every child is different, what is favoured one week is different from the next. Never assume a book is too old for your child, and remember to haul out some of the simpler books you many feel they have grown out of when they move on in their development and start to read for themselves.

A firm favourite that just seems to come back into favour every few months. Beautifully illustrated and written, longer than some of the others but I've been reading this to my son since he was a baby. He's enjoyed the rhythm of the words before he understood them, and by the time he was two was starting to repeat bits of the story. At 2.5 he was reciting it to anyone who wanted to listen and would join in and recite the bits of the story he knew when it was read aloud to him.

Hard work, constant planning, wind and weather observations, forecasting and a number of other nitty-gritty activities take an unavoidable step before the well-deserved joy. Having said that, you’d struggle finding a sailor or a fisherman that doesn’t see the bright side of it with a dash of humor and even sarcasm…

It took some convincing and a few years of some well-attended cruises before cruise lines saw the perks of such charters. Now, Nancy says the major cruise lines are calling her to arrange these trips. “We bring to the cruise ship a full complement of over-21, drinking age, gambling age passengers,” she says. “That means money to them.”

Still, the number of people discovering the seafaring joys of cruising while wearing nothing but a smile (and maybe a captain’s hat, if they’re feeling nautical) is growing. According to the American Association for Nude Recreation, about 30,000 people a year board these clothing-optional cruises. [links]

“As you can well imagine, it was not an easy convince in the beginning,” Nancy says of her early attempts to convince cruise ships to allow her to charter nude cruises. Her number one challenge: “Convincing them first and foremost that it wasn’t a prank call,“ she says, laughing, describing the initial reaction as, “’You wanna do what on my ship. ’” [links]
