For now the grease is soaking off the covers over night in simple green. I was going to try a stripper on the paint outside the cover and leave the inside as factory untill I found the rust and other plain steel with no coating inside. [links]

I pulled the valve covers from this junker engine, 1984 3.8 Ford V6 and found rust inside the covers (even the rocker arms have some rust). Mostly just surface rust spots nothing to bad. This is also a cover with a spot welded baffle inside I think, I did not see any way to remove it yet. [links]

What would you guys do with these? They're nothing special really, I was doing them more for practice than anything, but if they turn out nice enough I may put them on my 87 Cougar with same engine, so I want to do them right.

A complete discussion of this corrosion is contained in Steven J. McDanels, "Failure Analysis Of Launch Pad Tubing From The Kennedy Space Center," Microstructural Science, Vol. 25, 1998, ASM International, Materials Park, OH, pp. 125-129.

The picture on the left shows cracking and staining of a seawall near the Kennedy Space Center. The pitting corrosion in the right photo occured on an aluminum railing on a concrete causeway over an inlet to the Atlantic Ocean.

Fretting corrosion is greatly retarded when the contacting surfaces can be well lubricated as in machinery-bearing surfaces so as to exclude direct contact with air. here

The scuba tank above suffered galvanic corrosion when the brass valve and the steel tank were wetted by condensation. Electrical isolation flanges like those shown on the right are used to prevent galvanic corrosion. Insulating gaskets, usually polymers, are inserted between the flanges, and insulating sleeves and washers isolate the bolted connections

2, The home faucet will often appear to have dirt phenomenon. In the process of use to regularly clean up the surface, you can use a clean soft cloth with neutral soapy water to wipe clean. Do not use corrosive chemicals and hard brushes to clean up, such as ammonia, decontamination powder, toilet cleaner, iron brush, etc., so as not to cause surface damage.

The best way to remove rust is this necessity in life – toothpaste. First wet the rusty place with water, then squeeze out the toothpaste with a soft cloth and gently scrub, and then rinse with water quiet. This can be repeated several times until the rust is removed. [links]
