Make sure the engine is warm. Preforming this test on a cold engine will give wrong results. here

In a diesel engine, ignition of the fuel is caused by elevated temperature of air in the cylinder. These high heat levels are achieved through intense mechanical compression of the air. This is unlike a gasoline engine in which ignition is sparked by a spark plug. [links]

If the camshaft is broken, it stops the crankshaft from moving as well. Just like happens in the case of a broken timing belt, the crankshaft cannot push the piston into the cylinder so no pressure can be created. more

If the ring on any one of the piston breaks, it compromises the piston’s ability to lock gas in the cylinder when it compresses it in the cylinder. Piston rings often break as a result of overheating. Excess heat weakens the metal and they eventually break.

Stroke 4. Exhaust. The final step is the opening of the outlet valve at the top of the cylinder. At the same time, the continually turning crankshaft wheel again pushes the piston up and into the cylinder. This time it pushes exhaust fumes produced by the explosion out through the outlet valve.

You don't have to spend any money to do a compression test and tell us what you find. more

2. If I keep it and get the motor to run, I was told that the low compression would just be a loss of HP, but the 115hp would still be pumping out 65-75hp, which would be enough for the fishing I intended the boat to be used for. Is this true, and if so, is there any long term effects on the engine being used with low compression?

Low compression indicates failing mechanical parts. When they totally fail, they usually do very serious damage. Notice I said when, not if. here

Depending on the extent of the damage a simple replacement of the piston rings should restore compression. If the piston is damaged, then there is a good chance that the cylinder wall is also. In this case, rebuilding the entire top end is necessary. [links]

Most engines need a PSI of 90 and above to function properly, however, some engines have been known to run at lesser PSI. They are many compression testers on the market, so be sure to shop around for a high-quality set. Alternatively, some auto stores will loan or rent out their compression testers.

Having good compression is an essential component needed for any engine to run properly. To understand how compression works, you need to understand the basics behind the small engine. For one thing, your engine is a pressurized system. A mixture of fuel and air is combusted within this system using that pressure. The result is the rotation of the crankshaft and any external parts attached to it such as the head on your trimmer.

A compression tester is one of the most common ways to measure your engines PSI (pound per square inch). First, remove the spark plug and install the compression adapter into the spark plug hole. Place the engine in the run position and pull the starter recoil until the compression gauge needle reaches the highest PSI number on the gauge.

Signs that your engine may be losing compression are loss in power or trouble starting. However, no need to fear. Diagnosing the reason for the loss in compression is the first step to fixing the problem.

Determine whether worn valves or worn piston rings are the cause of your low compression. Remove the spark plug, and pour a cap full of W30 motor oil into the top of the open cylinder. Place your compression tester over the spark plug hole.
