The two-cycle gas engines used on many string-type weed trimmers require a mixture of gasoline and oil to keep the crankshaft and piston lubricated. Efficient operation requires the correct mix of gas to oil. Too much oil can foul the engine but too little will greatly shorten engine life because of insufficient lubrication. The correct fuel/oil ratio varies from one manufacturer to the next.

All Weed Eater brand two-cycle gas trimmers use a 40:1 ratio of gas to oil. That’s equal to 3.2 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of regular gas. The gas should be 87 octane with no more than 10 percent alcohol. The oil must be formulated for two-cycle engines. Don’t use automobile motor oil because it contains noncombustible additives that will foul the engine.

Other brands may use different ratios of gas to oil . For example, Echo trimmers run on a 50:1 ratio, equal to 2.6 ounces of oil per gallon of gas. Often the machine will have its fuel/oil ratio stamped on the gas cap or fuel tank, or printed in the owner’s manual. [links]

I have an older Jonsered string trimmer that calls for 25:1 while all my other 2 cycle equipment is 50:1, including a new Tanaka string trimmer. Why would the Jonsered need the different ratio? Would a synthetic multi ratio oil work for both the 25:1 and 50:1 engines or should I just have 2 mixes ready to go?

I mix 40:1 for all not had a problem just use a good 2 cycle oil not the cheap stuff

A weed trimmer is a useful garden tool, especially if you live somewhere hot and humid where weeds tend to flourish. Too little oil and the engine will overheat and seize up. Because weed trimmers do not have separate compartments for gas and oil, you must get the mix just right in order to ensure a healthy garden tool. The make and model of your weed trimmer will determine the correct fuel-to-oil mixture. Some models require a ratio of 32:1, 40:1 or even 50:1. Otherwise, you could harm the engine. of engine oil with 1 gallon of regular gasoline. It's all right to use gasoline that is blended with a maximum 10 percent alcohol. They can decrease the power of the engine, causing it to run erratically.

Calculate the amount of two-cycle engine oil that should be added to your gas. For example, if your weed trimmer has a ratio of 50:1, you would need about 2.5 oz. of oil for 1 gallon of gasoline. There are 128 oz. in 1 gallon, and 128 divided by 50 is close to 2.5. here

If your weed trimmer has a two-stroke engine, it needs two-cycle engine oil in the gas to operate correctly. Since two-stroke engines don't have a dedicated lubrication system, oil is mixed with the gas to keep the crankshaft lubricated. The proper ratio of this mixture is essential to keep the weed trimmer operating efficiently. Too much oil can cause the engine to gum up; too little oil won't lubricate it sufficiently. It is, however, easy to determine the oil-to-gas ratio in a weed trimmer.

Inspect your weed trimmer in a well-lit area. Near the gas tank of most weed trimmers, either imprinted on the gas tank cap or on the gas tank itself, you will see a set of numbers like 50:1 or 25:1. This is the ratio of gasoline to oil.

Look in the manual for the weed trimmer if you cannot find the ratio printed on the gas tank. The manual will give you the exact mixing ratio for your particular brand and model of weed trimmer. more

The TCG22EASSLP shares all the advantages of gas weed whackers – great power, complete freedom of movement, no messing with the cord (and winding it up after trimming) or switching outlets. Also you are not limited by battery life. On the other hand, it requires mixing the gas-oil fuel and a little maintenance. more

However, most of the typical disadvantages of gas powered tools are not present, or at least very limited – it’s lightweight, perfectly balanced and easy to maneuver, it’s not a problem even for women or seniors to use it for longer periods of time. It doesn’t vibrate much and the noise is also on a decent level (but it’s definitely louder than electric units of course)..

It requires only a little assembly (mounting the guard and handle), all needed tools are included. more

This is actually a Hitachi trimmer, we’ve added this video just to show you the power of the Tanaka model as they are very similar:
