Tip: Milky, beige-colored oil is a sign water is getting where it shouldn't. Also, watch for oily rainbows in the bilge water. Most leaks start as small drips. [links]
If bilge water rusts your engine’s steel oil pan and it leaks until the low-oil-pressure alarm sounds, you’ll have just seconds to react. If you don’t, “you might notice the engine hesitate,” says Michael Wheeler of HHB Marine Services in Hampton, New Hampshire. “Then the main bearings usually go first, and the pistons dig into the insides of the cylinders and the engine seizes.” Help yourself avoid that scenario with these tips.

The"XS" Xtreme Series 4-5/8" stroker oil pans are competition tested and race proven. They out perform all other pans available. Each pan starts out jig formed and precision TIG welded, then an exclusive race proven windage tray is added which prevents oil foaming and crankshaft windage, which helps to build more horsepower. Next a high volume oil pump pick-up with a support bracket is added. The entire pan is coated with a hardened aerospace epoxy to resist stains and corrosion. A flexible dipstick is included as well as a stainless steel bolt kit. Designed to clear most front style engine mounts including MerCruiser. A simple comparison of available marine oil pans clearly points out Hardin Marine oil pans are boat lengths ahead of all other oil pans. Run what leading racers worldwide already use - the Hardin Marine "XS" Xtreme Series offshore oil pan. here

I've been dealing with oil in the sump for the past 2 weeks! After changing the oil and filters (myself)prior to getting on the lake after the winter - I saw the dreaded oil in the sump. arg! I hoped it was from over filling - dipstick registered full after the oil change, but I was hoping. washed out the bilge yesterday and went for a ride. dipstick showed 1/2 qt low prior to ride. more oil. arg.
I talked to my mechanic yesterday. He said he looked at the timing cover and all is well. But, this engine has a hose connected to the oil pan that can be pulled out through a plug in the transom to drain the oil. Close observation indicated a leak somewhere along the hose as well as the oil pan gasket. He ordered a replacement. (He grumbled that he didn't like these hoses. he's seen several with leaks.) more
Re: 4.3L Oil Leak - front oil pan area here
A little more light. my mechanic said he had another customer who removed the plug while stored (thinking it was the bilge drain!). then forgot to put it back in. after a few minutes of running he got an oil pressure warning. you guessed it! the plug and hose was pulled into the prop and the hose was cut. all of the oil drained into the bilge and into the lake - BP's gulf of Mexico oil spill all over again! here
Re: 4.3L Oil Leak - front oil pan area here
I think I'll be Ok with a replacement hose. I'll try to remember to keep the plug in place! here
