A stator does not produce steady current. The electricity is instead produced in peaks. If you try to read stator voltage with a simple multimeter, you will get a very low reading, or no reading at all (see Figure 1). This is why a DVA peak volt adaptor is a MUST HAVE when testing and diagnosing stators. This simple tool is able to capture those peaks and deliver them as a steady voltage to the multimeter (see Figure 2). Look at this DVA peak volt adaptor for stators video to see how the DVA peak volt adaptor works. more

When I connect a digital volt meter across the pulser coil, charge coil and CDI I get strange readings (very low) when I crank the engine. My meter has a max DC voltage setting on it. more

I assumed this would allow me to read the maximum voltage produced by the devices to confirm if one of them is dead. Apparently this is not the case. here

Given that the coils are all within resistance tolerance I presume the CDI is the problem but would like to know for sure before ordering a replacement.

In testing I have checked resistance on the ignition coil, pulser coil and charge coil. all appear fine. Plugs were changed and plug leads checked too. here
