The movie was filmed on location in Uganda, so if you're planning to travel in that part of Africa, it's worth watching just to get a feel of the countryside. Of course, Uganda is now at peace and Idi Amin and his equally brutal successor, Milton Obote, are distant memories. [links]

"Tsotsi" is set in Soweto, one of South Africa's notoriously crime-ridden townships just outside of Johannesburg. Tsotsi (which means "thug" in township patois) is the name of the central character, an orphan, played by Presley Chweneyagae. He's a troubled teenager who steals a car and inadvertently ends up having to look after the young baby that was still in it.

Anyone traveling to Rwanda should read up on the genocide and try and get a better understanding of what exactly happened, but you could also read "We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families" by Philip Gourevitch for a more thorough observation of the events. Additionally, BBC has an informative page dedicated to the causes and effects of this atrocity called "Rwanda: How the Genocide Happened."

"The Constant Gardener" is about a recent widow who searches for the reasons behind his young wife's murder. The film is set in Kenya and is based on a novel by John le Carre. It's a murder mystery involving corrupt pharmaceutical companies trying to use poor Africans as guinea pigs for their latest drugs and British diplomats turning a blind eye in order to save face. The main actors Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Hubert Koundé and Bill Nighy are all excellent. here

Bogart and Hepburn not only give great performances, they are also wonderful together, and they make the on-screen relationship between their characters believable and interesting - it's great to watch as it develops. The adventures that they find are that much more entertaining for the way that you come to care about them. The story itself is exciting, too, with a lot of ups and downs for the heroes. Topping it off are the wonderful settings, with a lot of fine shots of wild animals and jungle scenery - there is always plenty to look at, and it also sets off the action nicely.

When one considers the circumstances under which The African Queen was made, it is safe to say that this movie is an improbable cinematic triumph. After nearly 66 years, many of us would agree that The African Queen still reigns. However, the stories about what happened behind the camera tell us how difficult it was to get the final product.

Bogart later said, “All I ate was baked beans, canned asparagus, and Scotch whiskey. Whenever a fly bit Huston or me, it dropped dead.”

Angela Allen, who worked as continuity checker on The African Queen, told the Guardian about the difficulties faced while filming. Allen said that the crew lived in a camp hacked out of the jungle and added that they had to leap into bed at night before the mosquitoes could get them. Every morning the crew had to shake their boots out just to make sure that there were no centipedes in them, and washing with red water from the river was a standard procedure. here

As they make their way through the African countryside, the devout spinster and the drunken bachelor begin to form a friendship, born out of their ability to survive against leech-infested swamps, dangerous rapids and through German occupied territory. Rose has stepped down from her moral high ground, and Charlie has been humanized from having to look beyond his own pleasure. As they near the location of German war ship, Charlie must decide whether to take up Rose's challenge to fight or to flee to safety. Humphrey Bogart won his only Academy Award for his performance, and the Library of Congress selected the film for the prestigious United States National Film Registry. here
