Emergency services were quickly on the scene and successfully rescued all seven guests and four crewmembers, according to Nice Matin, although a firefighter was later admitted to Antibes hospital with smoke inhalation. An investigation into the fire was later launched, with the incident not treated as suspicious.

Local reports suggested that the Custom Line yacht struck the pontoon with such force that the GRP hull was significantly damaged, although no-one was injured. In the hours after the above footage was filmed, the yacht sank to the extent that only the flybridge was visible above the water, eyewitnesses add.

The cruise ship which is operated by German-based Aida Cruises is the very first new generation class ordered by parent company Carnival Corporation. AIDAnova entered service in December 2018 and has taken the cruise line into a new era of cruise ship design. The ship is fully powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and built at the popular Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Sister cruise lines including Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises and P&O Cruises all have similar class ships. here

It’s currently Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas and she’s set to remain number one for many years to come. There are new ships that will come near and enter into the 200,000 gross ton club such as MSC’s new World-class ships, Royal Caribbean’s own Icon-class ships and Genting’s Global-class.

To shave weight, and help achieve a targeted 30-knot-plus top speed, the hull and superstructure will be made of Alustar aluminum, a super-strong, high-tensile alloy. Bouwhuis won’t reveal the yacht’s power, though the word “huge” comes out in the conversation. “You can’t fool nature if you want a 171-foot boat to go 30 knots,” he says. “It will have significant horsepower.”

The yacht has been commissioned by an experienced owner who is passionate about big-game fishing. “There are yachts out there that label themselves ‘sportfishermen,’ but they tend to be big motoryachts with a small fishing cockpit on back. Project 406 stays true to the traditional proportions.” more

It’s hard to understand the unbridled passion for fishing, especially when discussing the world’s largest sportfishing boat. But actor Lee Marvin summed up the feeling nicely: “I only make movies to finance my fishing.” [links]

Tom Perkins had done it all. He'd made a fortune, conquered Silicon Valley, even been Danielle Steel's fifth husband for a time. His venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, was an early backer of Genentech, Netscape, and Google. But when he turned 70 a few years ago, Perkins decided to do something even grander and a bit crazier: He would build the biggest, riskiest, fastest, most technologically advanced, single-hulled sailing mega yacht in the world. The 289-foot Maltese Falcon, launched in spring 2006, is that engineering dream come to life. more

Under sail, the square-rigged Falcon evokes the magnificent clipper ships that raced across the oceans in the late 19th century. But Perkins' creation is more New Old Thing than mere tribute to the past. The heart of the boat's technology is a novel rigging system called the DynaRig, designed by Dutch naval architect Gerald Dijkstra and based on a half-century-old German concept. The genius — and risk — of the DynaRig is its use of freestanding masts that rotate to adjust sail trim and tack the boat. There are practically no external ropes or wires, no traditional rigging of any sort to brace the spars or control the nearly 26,000 square feet of sail. The 15 sails deploy at the push of a button, rolling out from inside each hollow mast along recessed tracks on stationary horizontal yardarms. When Dijkstra's drawings first came in, the CEO of Perini Navi, the Italian company that built the ship, muttered, "Whatever that is, it's not going to sail." Fellow mega yacht owner and media tycoon Rupert Murdoch looked at them and asked Perkins, "Is it going to look so frightening that people won't go on the boat?" [links]

If the 1,367-ton Falcon were anchored in New York Harbor, its masts would nearly reach the tablet in the arm of the Statue of Liberty. The exterior has teak decks, a varnished cap rail, and exquisitely finished surfaces — all attributes of a classic ship — yet the overall look is sleek, metallic, and ultramodern, almost foreboding. When Darth Vader builds his own intergalactic yacht, it will look like this.
