Founded by Austin native and pit master Mel Rodriguez and Miami native and Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver Isaiah McKenzie, the eatery originally debuted as a pop-up in the summer of 2020 and quickly grew a following. The counter-service style eatery serves up items like the Brisket Sundae made with a mac and cheese base then layered with baked beans and cream corn then topped with smoked brisket, cotija cheese, crema and house sauce; platters and meat by the pound like smoked pulled pork, smoked sausage, pork spare ribs and Texas style brisket; and for some Miami and Texas fusion: brisket y queso empanadas and smoked pork rib croquettes.

This Austin import — which is described by many as “altering the city’s culinary identity” — has made its much anticipated debut in Miami. Located in the heart of Wynwood, it boasts creative sushi and sashimi made with fish flown in daily from the Tsukiji market, as well as makimono, yakimono, agemono, and other Japanese dishes in a chic and serene atmosphere. For those who want to give the entire menu a try, they can opt for the 10-course chef’s tasting, a six-course signature tasting, and a six-course vegetarian tasting. more

As for the main goods, don’t miss out on items such as the Jonesing HOT Sandwich with Jonesville hot honey fried chicken, southern slaw and pickles served on a brioche bun; and the Chick’n Bucket Original, a four-piece bucket served with pickled veggies and pepper sauce.

If you’re in the market for Miami’s glorious heyday dive bars, we’ve got just the thing for you. Located inside the Selina Gold Dust Motel, Don’s 5 Star Dive Bar is the brainchild of Kush Hospitality, the group behind spots like Kush and LoKal. The dive bar pays nostalgic homage to the ’70s and ’80s with tributes to Miami’s famous “dons,” and nods to the days of lore throughout the space. Expect themed specialty cocktails like the Don’t F*ck With Don Shula with Mezcal, Campari, and vermouth; Puta Madre Punch with Cruzan Light, Cruzan Dark and mixed juices; and Donnie Hates Yoohoo with Stoli Vanilla, Miami Club Rum Coffee Liqueur and espresso; and beers, wines, and dive bar shots. more

Time Out Market Miami just upped its game with a little bit of Amaris Jones and a whole lot of fried chicken. Known for serving as a personal chef to celebs like Chris and Adrienne Bosh and Rick Ross, as well as for her former Motown-inspired eatery South Street, Jones’ latest spot pays homage to Southern fare at its finest, with a healthier twist. Diners can pair their chicken, which Jones marinates according to a recipe she snagged from her mom, with side options like kale salad with mushroom, carrots, cucumber, pickled onions, feta, pumpkin seeds, and mustard balsamic dressing; spiced loaded fries with Cajun spice, jalapeno, sweet onions, and crumbled feta; grilled green tomatoes with crispy shallots, micros and “love sauce;” and more.

I tend to be as suspicious of a big, new Wynwood restaurant as I am of an unknown number that wants to talk to me about money I’m owed by the IRS - which could be mine if I just provide a simple DNA sample. But Doya is a wonderful surprise, and dinner here is as delightful as finding out the IRS does, in fact, owe you $5,000. There was really nothing I didn’t enjoy about Doya. The big Aegean restaurant has some lovely outdoor seating, and a spacious dining room that’s pretty enough for a date but casual enough for an easy Wednesday dinner. The best part about Doya is the food, though. The menu is a huge list of meze plates, and everything I ordered was great. The octopus in the octopus salad was as tender as fresh mozzarella, my lamb kebab was beautifully cooked, and the huge mussels were served in a perfectly balanced wine and garlic sauce. It was not only an excellent dinner, but might make me actually hear out that person who claims to be with the IRS next time they call.

Sometimes you know you’re going to love a movie after the very first scene. Dinner can be like that too. At Casa Isola, a new Italian spot in Sunset Harbour, that first scene was the pane al prosciutto: a warm little circle of bread with cubes of prosciutto baked in and a parmesan honey butter for smearing. After that, I had the same thought I have during the first five minutes of most A24 movies: this is going to be good. And it was - from the simple but delicious rigatoni alla vodka to the massive veal chop parmigiana that arrives plated alongside the deep-fried bone it was once attached to. The food’s all great, served in big portions, and it’s the reason to love Casa Isola. They have some outdoor seating and a dining room you’ve probably seen in another Italian restaurant somewhere, with fake vines wrapped around an indoor pergola. But luckily the food is good enough to make this place as memorable as the best movie you watched this year. [links]
