Out of all the atrocities I had watched and read about that day, there was one thing that stuck out for me. It wasn’t the baby sea turtles tangled in plastic rings or the sick whales eating plastic bags that got through to my heart. It was the birds. The image of dead birds with hard, protruding stomachs full of plastic; that was my breaking point. With an ironic slap to the face, these horrible sky demons pulled on my heart strings and made me question my lifestyle choices. here

While going plastic free is not a new concept, it’s not something I ever thought I would try. A while ago I thought about experimenting with a zero-waste lifestyle, but it seemed like too much work and I was not prepared to even entertain the idea of giving up cheese. here

About 2 months ago, I was having one of those days, one of those stay-in-your-pjs, everything-sucks, not-even-puppies-can-cure-your-mood, kind of days. Naturally, I spent the day watching documentaries and reading articles about the world and what a crap-hole it can be, to brighten my spirits. [links]

The idea of going completely plastic free was daunting, so I decided to present it as a self-challenge. Can I go 30 days without buying anything plastic? Every so often I will give myself mini-challenges like going a month without eating processed food, doing yoga for 30 days, or going on a Netflix hiatus (after watching the Good Wife in a disgusting amount of time), so the thought of trying to go plastic-free for 30 days seemed more palatable. I watched and read about our materialistic culture, melting icebergs, and how the ocean has become a dumping ground for our refuse, all of which did nothing to help me out of my funk. Before I continue with my story, it’s important (for those of you who don’t know me) that I preface the next paragraph with this: I hate birds. Birds are terrifying creatures with beady little eyes, jugular slicing talons and eyeball-snatching beaks. Can we really trust a species that survived the dinosaurs? Alas, I digress…

We proudly support Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii and the Parley Global Cleanup Network. Both groups are working hard to remove plastic and abandoned fishing gear from the ocean and coastlines. They’re creating solutions to repurpose the plastic they remove, educating people on a world without waste, and working with manufacturers to help keep plastic out in the first place.
