sticks out of her lip and bangle bracelets jingle all the way up her arm. Across the street, a woman walks with high heels and a fox wrap an elegant silver evening gown drapes off her body. In her ears are shiny diamond studs, princess cut, and on her fourth finger is a two carat diamond, gold bracelets adorn each wrist. She appears much safer than the teenager. The man accompanying her keeps a possessive arm around her waist, his watch glistens in the street lights, and the cuff links add a sense

The Humble Origins of Mindful Diamond The story of Mindful Diamond begins with a mission inspired by my mother. As a single woman, she moved from India to the USA to take on the American business world – no prior experience to her name. Her drive to succeed was as strong as her desire to give her three children the greatest possible life. With only $80 to her name, she began a small-scale gemstone business in 1985. Despite setbacks and hardships along the way, her determination allowed her here

to face today. Sierra Leone, in particular, has struck an interest because of the many films and readings that try to depict this story of the civil war. In class, we have viewed two films representing the problems with child soldiers in Sierra Leone which include films titled Blood Diamond and Ezra. Both films represent opposite sides of the spectrum, as Blood Diamond shows the Western view of child soldiers and Ezra represents the first African view of child soldiers. Before discussing the two

looking at that the painting Horseman of the Apocalypse, there is a big diamond shape with the edges touching the corners of the canvas. The reason the diamond stands out so much is because Pierre Daura purposely made the colors inside of it lighter which created a strong focal point to what is inside of the diamond. Inside of the diamond is a galloping horse including the colors red, black, pale, and white. Outside of the diamond there is four horse riders which correspond to the four colors of the [links]

the mines like Solomon. They were made to mine for diamonds, blood diamonds. These gems are used to fund wars throughout the country. While working in the mines, Solomon chanced upon a huge pink diamond. He was caught by the commander of the rebels while he was trying to hide the gem. The government forces then arrived, making

“The price of diamonds is too high”. Diamonds have always been presumed to be rare. They have been present in history as a symbol of wealth and luxury as they were so difficult to find. Nowadays diamonds are mined and are found all over the world but they are sold through a cartel. (Epstein 1982) A cartel limits the supply of a product in order to keep prices high and to limit competition. (South African Pocket Oxford Dictionary: 2002) This raises the question of whether diamonds are actually worth more

In the early 1700s, as India’s diamond supplies began to decline, Brazil emerged as an important source. Diamonds were discovered in the pans of gold miners as they sifted through the gravels of local rivers. Once it reached its full potential, Brazil dominated the diamond market for more than 150 years.

The 1800s brought increasing affluence to western Europe and the United States. Explorers unearthed the first great South African diamond deposits in the late 1800s just as diamond demand broadened.

The South African sources affected many segments of the diamond industry. This was especially true as diamond mining moved from the surface to farther underground. Because of the huge costs and comparatively low yields involved, the new sources forced the development of more efficient mining techniques. They created the need for better marketing. They also led to advances in cutting and polishing—advances that increased efficiency, reduced costs, and enhanced the appearance of finished stones. more

A diamond has to go through a lot before it reaches the jeweler’s display case. It forms deep in the earth under extreme heat and pressure. It’s ejected violently upward until it arrives at or near the earth’s surface. It’s forced from its hiding place by nature or by man. Then it’s cleaved and cut and polished until its natural beauty shines through.

When's the last time you saw an engagement ring that didn't feature a diamond? It's probably been a while, if ever at all. According to The International Gem Society (IGS), the diamond is the most popular gemstone. Nonetheless, a myth about the gem continues to be believed: Diamonds are rare.

According to Bloomberg, the corporation was incredibly successful and massively powerful until the early 2000s, when the diamond king found itself dethroned. Nevertheless, De Beers is still active in the diamond industry. In 2017, they invested $140 million into their marketing budget. While the diamond market is performing worse than in years past, De Beers excels in high-stress situations. After all, the company got off the ground during an economic downturn and saw success from the Great Depression onward. "No pressure, no diamonds," right? De Beers just might be forever. [links]

Meghan Markle's ring was recently on everyone's minds and browser histories. And, who could forget Mariah Carey's ginormous 35 carat engagement ring from James Packer? It's not just women sporting these ostentatious rocks, either. In 2016, Darren Rovell confirmed on Twitter, "There are 283 diamonds in [the New England Patriots'] new champ ring." Yes, 283 — in one ring.

Diamonds are known for their “fire” or dispersion. This refers to their ability to separate white light into the colors of the rainbow. In fact, diamond does have quite a high dispersion value of 0.044. However, that’s a far cry from rutile, again, with a dispersion of 0.280. In fact, synthetic rutile stones, known as “Titania,” used to be sold as imitation diamonds. However, they showed too much dispersion to make passable diamonds! [links]

With proper encouragement, the movie industry displayed its most glamorous actresses, draped in diamonds. As a result, diamonds soon became a top status symbol for the rich and famous. This peaked perhaps with Marilyn Monroe’s performance of the song, Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, in the 1953 film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Satellite technology, originally designed to find likely oil reserves, also showed the geology likely to hold diamonds. As a result, new discoveries began to multiply. For example, Australia became one of the first developed nations to discover major diamond resources. De Beers made a deal with them to distribute all the rough, except for the very rare pink diamonds. In 1996, Australia ended its arrangement with De Beers.

De Beers did wonderful things for the diamond industry. However, not everything about De Beers is nice. As diamonds were discovered in other parts of Africa and South America, De Beers gained control of the rough diamond supply. Allegedly, the tactics used to gain control included murder and kidnapping.

Outside the confines of the Earth, diamonds are still common. A recent discovery indicates that some stars collapse on themselves, creating giant diamond crystals. In the constellation Centaurus, there lies a white dwarf that has crystallized into a diamond about 2,500 miles in diameter and weighing 10 billion, trillion, trillion carats. more
