Up north, where the sun doesn't shine that much, dark interiors are understandably unpopular. But here in the tropics, sunny days can get just as boring -- not to mention the blinding light, heat and carcinoma that it causes -- so popping down into your deep dark abode immediately renders a sense of soothing coolness, away from the glare and shutting out the rest of the world. If you like that sort of atmosphere, you'll love this one. And it is decidedly masculine. No red or green leather and brass, but you can get teal. Close enough. Spittoons and cigar clippers are optional, for those of you who defy convention and love your Monte Chistos and La Habanas. Easy clean vinyl headliner if you're into the soothing effects of tobacco.

The day prior to writing this, I did a survey on a 36 footer that had the electric panel crunched between the helm and the cabin side, literally at floor level. Had to get on my hands and knees to operate a switch. How on earth could anyone tolerate such a thing, I wondered. I mean, is it someone's idea of great fun to have to stand on your head to read a volt meter or throw a switch? Talk about a designer with his head up his ass. Where are the panels on a Tiara? At eye level where they should be. here

We've always liked Tiara and Pursuit boats, both products of S2 Yachts of Holland, Michigan. In times past we've recommended them as good, solid quality, well-designed boats that are a bit more utilitarian than glitzy. The kind of boat that holds up well to year 'round use under the blazing Florida sun, as well as the five month monsoon season that can dump 80" of rain on your boat annually.

Easy boarding. Some of the cockpit designs we've seen lately are truly atrocious. It's hard to image that a designer figures that you could tolerate only boarding over the transom, or having to climb all over the upholstered seating -- or worse yet -- walking across a wet bar. But they do. The 3500 has a built-in step each side, which is completely out of the way so you don't get to trip over it, and immediately behind the arch where there is a handy grab rail. And with that pointed diamond non-skid pattern, there's no chance of slipping and getting your bones rearranged. Even Grandma could board with relative ease. But, if you like to mimic the Europeans, who apparently don't have many docks, she's got a 30" wide platform that is removable. It looks like it's integral, but it's not.

The helm layout is one of the best I've seen. That is so obvious from the above photo I won't bother to describe it. The large, 20" destroyer wheel -- well, I can't understand how anyone could tolerate those puny little 12" wheels they're putting on boats these days. Placed vertically, manning the helm was a real pleasure for me, standing up or sitting down. Sitting back I like to drive with my feet, and that's nearly effortless here. more

Here's a settee layout that really works! And notice the huge electric panel set at eye level. This is one of the things that distinguishes Tiara from the lesser breeds. TV is also viewable from forward berth. here

Nice size convertible lounge to starboard, of the sort that you can get some use out of. One strange thing here is that this one was not designed to convert to a berth. The table is fixed and does not move without unbolting it. Odd. [links]

I loved most everything about this boat but one really bad thing: the engine compartment. I'll engage in some low class language here and just say that it positively sucks. I mean, they couldn't have done it any worse. Not even Sea Ray has managed to create an accessibility nightmare like this one. more

With the 320 HP Cats she's a bit on the slow side but does fine with the 375's, okay with Crusader 350's and rather slow with the Merc 330's. But with the 320's, you'll get a heck of a lot of engine life from them. Handling? It has a reasonably deep entry, but the overall vee is quite shallow. As a true fishing machine, this is where it falls flat, for its not going to keep up even with a Hatteras when the going gets rough. The trade-off here is speed versus rough water performance. Its going to be bumpy in a short chop. [links]

That complaint aside, there's not much else to criticize. One boat had been used hard, and in recent years not well maintained. It hadn't been compounded and waxed in years, but when this was done shortly after the purchase, the gel coat came back beautifully and really took a shine. We also like the lack of feature stripe tape, decals and black painted trim and accents, which means that you don't get all the sun and heat expansion damage that is so prevalent on late model boats. No leaky windows, no damaged interior paneling, no cracked and faded plastics, no crummy die cast zinc alloy fittings falling apart, no wood, no teak or other cheap junk that can't be restored or replaced. Oh, yes, and no corroded aluminum trim either.

If what we see of the exterior is first rate, the interior falls a little short of that. Some of the materials just don't match the quality of the rest of the boat. The good news is that interior renovations are not expensive.

The engine room? Well, here you pay the price for squeezing a pair of Cat 3208's in there along with the generator. But owners can count their blessings that the genny isn't under the cockpit deck. Getting at stuff down there is a tough proposition, even for routine maintenance, so you need to clear out the salon and pull the hatches.

The price? These boats hold their value so the prices are up there. But, in our view, worth every penny. This boat is built to last, and last it does. No future tense here.

Brokers and dealers like to call used boats "pre owned," but we like the term "pre tested' much better. One of the really great advantages of buying a used boat is that it is, indeed, pre tested. By the time it is three years old, most boats have been used hard enough, and long enough, that any major problems will have manifested themselves by now. That's why you'll find these reviews to be so much more than just a review of any particular boat, for they will give you an insight into a wide range of boats.
