My wife uses this great little tiller. The primer bulb crumbled and since then it will not stay running. I replaced the bulb this morning but still can't get it to run. Changed out the gas but didn't do any good. It will fire and run for 1-3 seconds then die. Seems if I over prime it runs a little longer but dies. Seems like it is running out of gas. I suspect something is plugged up in that little carburetor. In the old days I used to take these apart and clean them up, sometimes put new gaskets in them. but this little thing would be very tedious to rebuild. A new carb is about $60 looks like. Seems like just replacing it would be the way to go, but I think all the fuel lines need replacing too. I pulled the line out of the gas tank and blew out the fuel filter (it didn't look dirty) and could not get the little fuel line back on the filter with the tiny little hose clamp. After breaking of a few millimeters twice I finally put the line on the filter without the clamp. Pretty tight anyway. That fuel line is totally inside the gas tank and looks impossible to get to - same little clamps inside the tank. Then two more lines going from the tank to the carb on the outside.

Seems working on this thing is almost like micro surgery so I will probably take it to my lawnmower dealer and let them fix it unless somebody has any brilliant ideas.

I have a four year old mantis tiller with a two stroke single cylinder engine with a ZAMA diaphragm model C1U type carburetor. It starts Ok, but wont run. If it runs, it won't run high speed, like its flooding and it dies. Pull and choke, pull and no choke and it starts but wont stay running.
On year two the carb was rebuilt (at a shop) because I left fuel in the tank over the winter, bad boy. I did it this year again so I put the gasket and diaphram in (rebuilt). Good job, it started but wont stay running. Muffler is not clogged. The fuel line is sucking air, I THINK. from the fuel filter and tu beassembly it plugs in the 3-hole plug that exits the side of the fuel tank. A separate 3 inch tube goes to the intake of the carb. Is this suppose to be one continuous hose, no break in it? Looks like at one time it was one 8-inch tube, fuel filter to carb. Could this be causing an air leak? Tubing is sort of brittle. Will replace when I get some tubing. Think this will cure it? f not I'll be back tomorrow.

Have you take out the muffler to clean the muffler? Does it has a spark arrestor screen, that need to be cleaned. Do that first and see what happen. here

I tore the carburator down, soaked it in carb cleaner and blew out all of the passage ways with compressed air. I replaced all of the gaskets and diaphrams on it as well.

Need some help. I have a Mantis tiller about 5 years old that has had regular use. It was hard to start last year and wouldn't start this year.

Did you buy a rebuild kit? What model (newer one with primer bulb or older one without?) If it got a primer bulb will it pull gas up and through the carb.? Just cleaning didn't do anything for a bad diaphramn, needle and seat, or clogged orifices. It's not flowing gas through the carb. Plus once you tear a carb. apart somtimes air gets trapped in the carb. and it takes awhile for the gas to siphon up through the carb especially if you don't have a primer bulb. more

IMO If you used a new rebuild kit and installed it correctly the idle circiut is still probably plugged. To get to it properly you have to remove the welch plug to clean the passages out should be three orifice holes Idle, mid, and high flow.
