Hi Glacierbear <br /> I don't know of any alterate item to replace these things. Anything that is cost afective anyway. They are a pain. They are not repairable. They can be replaced at costly sum. While you have yours apart, check to see that the operating cable and lever are functioning properly. Try disconnecting the cable from the cylinder. Clamp one ennd of the cylinder in a vice. Pull\push on the valve rod with pliers. See if you can get the piston to move. I have been fighting with mine for years. Fortuneately I have a jet pump on mine and do not need to tilt it often. Some how I feel, if I could get more travel (more pull than the lever will allow) of the cable, it would free the piston. I do not belive I could restore any type of assist. Let me know what you find.

I am going to look into the worn bushing/ housing that Frank suggested. This may give me the throw I think I might need. This would at least allow me to tilt the motor. more

some types of oils do not mix. They congeal and form globs of goo. Brake fluid and motor oil is an example.

You will need to bleed the system as you know, and add more fluid as you do. Cycle 5 to 6 times, leave in the up position, fill, cycle 5 to 6 times, leave in the up position, fill, etc. until you can fill no more. [links]

ATF Dexron III is fine. I dont like mixing oils though personally, so I would drain the old stuff first.

I've never had problems mixing old oil with new as long as the old fluid is clean and clear. Water in oil is always bad and should be resolved immediately before bypass valves, gears, or sensors get rusty. Dirty oil with black stain is a sign of oring damages. Industrial hydraulics eventually wear out the oil. The pump gears shear it and eventually break it down. I doubt any recreational boat has ever come close to that much trim/tilt use.

The Aftermarket kits available aren't built properly and utilize O-ring style seals rather than the proper seals designed by the manufacture, we do not redesign these seals just seek the best quality for longevity. We did redesign the plunger seal to help solve some leak down issues we are using a double plunger seal in the kit.
