Next to Young island is a tall, rocky pinnacle and home to the ruins of the elevated canon battery of Fort Duvernette. Fort Duvernette which is located south of mainland St. Vincent, is a 195-foot-high volcanic plug comprised of hard columnar basalt. It is also known locally as ‘Rock Fort’. One can find two batteries with cannons, which were constructed during the colonial era of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, for the defence of the then important town of Calliaqua.
