Somewhere on the CDI Electronics website IIRC there is a guide to testing ignition systems.

I recently bought a 1998 Tohatsu 5hp for my dinghy and I'm having a couple of issues with it and would really appreciate any help I could get.
On the first and only outing it would run fine anywhere up to half throttle, once you pass half throttle it would cut out without any warning after about 30 seconds.
After this has happened it becomes a pain to get started again and seems to backfire occasionally when trying to start it. Eventually it made a loud bang on of the pulls and it managed to fire out one of the bolts holding the lower unit/gearbox onto the leg.
First off I would check the tank fuel filter isn't partly blocked. When it cuts out, have you dropped the carb float chamber to see if it's dry?
Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? I'm a bit reluctant to get it looked at professionally as I can't really afford any extra expense at the moment. I'm going to rebuild the carb soon as I suspect the cutting out is to do with some gunk in there, fuel tank, lines and filter are clean. here
Leg bolt dropping out is weird. I would be questioning why the previous owner sold it - buyer beware. here
