Queen Mary Sailing Club
Based on one of the massive reservoirs that supply London’s water, this isn’t the prettiest place to sail, but very convenient if you live in the country’s capital. It is also famous for running the iconic annual handicap pursuit race, the Bloody Mary, every January. The event is a very popular one and attracts entries from across the country from Olympic sailors to club racers. [links]

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club
The Royal Cornwall is a very sailor-friendly club, running as it does a number of dinghy and bigger boat events. I remember its great food from competing in a dinghy event run by the club. The clubhouse is set very much in the centre of Falmouth, which provides a great venue for events especially in the summer with plenty to do and lots of accommodation.

Sure, having a yacht is important. But equally important is belonging to the right yacht club. And belonging to the right club isn’t always easy. At the Yacht Club de Monaco, for instance, you must first be approved of by H.S.H. Prince Albert II to be granted membership. At the New York Yacht Club, you have be considered worthy of being listed among past members including Franklin D. Roosevelt.

History: Founded in 1883, today the YCA is not only the best sailing club in Argentina, it also regularly sends its delegates to symposiums of the Offshore Racing Council to make rulings on yacht racing in South America.

Black tie and boat shoes are de rigueur for the happy few who crack the ranks of the ultra-exclusive, 200-year-old Royal Yacht Squadron, headquartered in a 16th-century castle in England's Isle of Wight. Today, it’s best known as the heart of the legendary Cowes Week regatta, when thousands of sailors and revelers alike gather to await the firing of the club’s brass cannons. here

The New York Yacht Club acquired Harbour Court in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1987. The grand, Norman-style mansion was built in 1906 and sits on eight acres overlooking Brenton's Cove. The connection between the New York Yacht Club and Newport dates back to the club's founding in the mid-1800s, when the NYYC founders sailed from the Battery to Newport on their inaugural summer cruise. more

It’s been 175 years since John Cox Stevens invited eight friends aboard his schooner Gimcrack, anchored off Lower Manhattan, to propose the creation of the New York Yacht Club. The newly formed society ran its first regatta in 1845, and at the turn of the century, a Beaux-Arts-style mansion was built on land donated by then-Commodore J. Pierpont Morgan and designed by Whitney Warren and Charles D. Wetmore (who went on to create Grand Central Station). Today, its cavernous Model Room (pictured) displays more than 1,000 models of members’ boats and America’s Cup vessels. more

Winner of a Singapore Institute of Architects Architectural Design Award for its modern incarnation (a former clubhouse was lost to a massive container terminal), Asia’s oldest yacht club is replete with cultural pride of place. Republic of Singapore Yacht Club is now marked by a soaring, serrated roofline that pays homage to the traditional buildings of the Minangkabau, an Indonesian ethnic group.

Established by Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in 1953, the Yacht Club De Monaco has long been a place for the principality’s high-fliers to get together to talk boats in wonderful French accents. With 800 members, the club was founded to develop yacht and motorboat sailing, to act as a link between people who love the sea and yacht lovers with professional associations. In addition to playing host to many high-profile sailing events throughout the year, the clubhouse is a major pull for members; strictly off-limits to those without a pass, the clubhouse overlooks Port Hercules and features a showy cocktail bar and a distinguished restaurant. Those wishing for induction need to be introduced by two sponsor members, as well as submitting an application form that is then committee reviewed.

Founded in 1844, the New York Yacht Club has become one of the world’s most influential yachting institutions, and it has a membership that’s strictly invitation-only. With more than 3,000 members, the club is characterized by its Gothic-style clubhouse in midtown Manhattan, where a nautical-themed limestone façade contains a room that houses the world’s largest collection of model boats. In addition to its landlocked headquarters, the club also runs Harbour Court, a clubhouse that sits on the water in Newport. With sailing regattas galore, elegant dining options, glamorous patios, and libraries stacked with books, the New York Yacht Club is arguably the Bungalow 8 of the boating world.

The oldest sailing club in the United Kingdom, the Royal Thames Yacht Club sits proud in London’s upscale Knightsbridge area, with Harrods just a stone’s throw away and Hyde Park located across the street. Founded in 1775, the club originally organized sailing on the Thames before moving most of its races to the salty waters of the Solent and Cowes. As a member, you’ll get to enjoy a number of annual races — both on UK waters and overseas — three yearly cruises and all the amenities afforded by the gorgeous clubhouse. Inside, there are bars, reading rooms, a world-class restaurant, a well-stocked cellar, a coffee house, and cabins for those who want a base in the heart of the capital. The many social events often include glittering balls, dinner parties and golf days, allowing members to network and mingle to their heart’s content.
