Towing Capacity: The towing capacity for the Ford Explorer was pretty similar, no matter what year you were looking at if you compared similar engines. The 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines seemed to range from 2,000-5,000 lbs. and the larger 8 cylinder engines ranged from about 3,500-7,100 lbs. or slightly more.
The Ford Explorer is a popular mid-sized SUV and a lot of people seem to wonder how much weight they can actually pull. I looked online and I got some pretty vague answers, so I decided to break down the Explorer's trailer weight ratings in an easy-to-read and convenient format.

Axle Ratio/Configurations: There were three main axle configurations that I noticed that were standard on the Explorers and these were a RWD, 4WD and AWD options. The overall weight capacities did not seem directly affected by the drivetrain configuration and had little to no effect on the pulling statistics. here
Engine Choices: In the Ford Explorer's lifespan, there were many different engines used throughout 2000-2021 that ranged from 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders and even 8 cylinder engines. The 8 cylinder engines had some of the best pulling capabilities (obviously) but the 6 cylinder engines also had respectable numbers and seemed to be one of the most popular engines throughout the years.

This figure is higher than many of the 2014 Explorer’s current, similarly-sized three row SUV competitors that rate at an average tow capacity of 3500 pounds. This is one tough towing and hauling machine.
Base pricing for the 2014 Ford Explorer 4WD V6 Limited like the one tested here is $40,100 and our loaner was equipped with a $5425 Special Option Group which added voice activated in-dash navigation, upgraded leather, heated steering wheel, a blind spot warning system, seatbelt mounted airbags, a back-up warning monitor system, lane keeping assistance, rain sensing wipers, HD headlamps and a tow package. Additionally, there was an $1150 adaptive cruise control/collision mitigation system for those who dislike watching the road ahead of them. Total came to an MSRP of just over $48,000.
