I take it the black box is up under the dash or something because i got the whole thing from bellhousing to prop but saw no black box. And I bet that box is expensive.

I would bet that gauge is used for the SX type drives, not the older 290 style. I've never seen an analog meter on an older DP without the black box and associated wiring.
Here is some info I have on the black box, and testing the sender which will give you the ohms rating you have to work with.
That cheap sender is $150, the black box close to 300 about 6 ot 7 years ago if I remember correctly. Those black boxes also had a high failure rate.
Then you need all the special ended wiring harnesses, relays etc. to make it all work. Probably really what you want to spend. If the sender is ok, You might try working a regular trim tilt gauge with it to see if you can make it work.
