Though we didn’t end up spending any time at the pool (too busy swimming in the blue bays of Fethiye!), it has lots of sun beds and cute little pool cabanas for guests to use. It’s definitely slightly pricier than some of the other accommodation options in Fethiye, but it was 100% worth it.

I have to be honest – I didn’t know what to expect from Fethiye and Oludeniz. Sure, I had seen photos of paragliders soaring above the Blue Lagoon, but what else did the region had to offer? When we were putting together our 2 week Turkey itinerary, we decided that we needed some time by the ocean after time in the landlocked region of Cappadocia and ancient city of Ephesus.

Fethiye was once known as the ancient city of “Telmessos”, one of the most important cities of the Lycian civilization. Telmessos was a culturally rich and flourishing city, and home to several monuments that still stand to this day. It is located in the Aegeon region in southwest Turkey, about 4 hours south from Izmir and 3 hours west from Antalya.

A trip to Antalya would not be complete without a day at the beach. The closest and main beaches are Konyaalti Beach and Lara Beach. Stretching for 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the Beydagğari Mountains, Konyaalti Beach is one of the closest beaches to Antalya. However, note that it is a beach with more pebbles than sand, so it may not be the best place to lie by the sea for a whole day. At 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) away from Antalya, Lara Beach is marginally further than Konyaalti. It is a stunning beach and extremely popular among tourists, so expect it to be crowded. more

Termessos, one of the best-preserved ancient cities, is located 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) north-west of Antalya. For 5 TRY (1.70 USD), you get to explore this Pisidian city famous for its theater. Similarly, Perge is an ancient Anatolian city just 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) east of Antalya. Now a site of ancient ruins, it was once home to a Bronze Age acropolis, and known for its remains of an ancient Hellenistic-Roman gate tower. Continuing further east, 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Antalya, is Aspendos, an ancient Greco-Roman city that is home to the best-preserved Roman theater on the Mediterranean. Since 1994, the annual Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival has been held there. If you head out early, it is possible to visit both Perge and Aspendos in one day. [links]

Located 245 kilometers (152 miles / around 3 hours) away from Antalya, Hierapolis and Pamukkale are a little far for a day trip. The area is home to natural healing thermal pools and one of the world’s most fascinating geographical landscapes, which is worth a visit if you have extra time to spend a night there. With at least 2 million visitors annually, this is easily Turkey’s most-visited attraction. [links]

Today we continue our journey south, stopping along the way to see a demonstration of the ancient art of carpet weaving at a local factory. We’ll stop in a local village for lunch and a visit to the Camlik Steam Train Museum where we can view the excellent collection. We continue on to coastal Marmaris. Once a sleepy fishing village, Marmaris is now a bustling center of commerce where fishing trawlers dock next to million-dollar yachts. Here we board our 14-guest gulet, a replica of a traditional Turkish fishing boat. Today’s gulets are built with modern comforts in mind, containing small but cozy cabins with private bath and shower, public areas and broad decks in an area approximately 85 feet long and 21 feet wide. Beautiful craftsmanship combined with ancient artistry makes the gulet the perfect vessel in which to cruise the waters of the Turquoise Coast. After settling in to our cabins, we’ll enjoy our first dinner on board, prepared by the ship’s crew with fresh local ingredients. Tonight you may wish to join others sleeping on deck under the stars.

This morning we take a walking orientation tour of Antalya, where we see the resort city’s Old Town, the extravagantly carved Hadrian’s Gate, and the lovely Yivli (fluted) Minaret. Then we board a coach for the ride to Antalya’s Archaeological Museum, which chronicles the history of the area through a wealth of ancient artifacts discovered locally. Of special interest here is the “God Gallery,” housing statues of 15 gods from Aphrodite to Zeus. We return to our hotel in time for lunch on our own. The remainder of the day is at leisure; you may wish to indulge in an authentic Turkish bath! Dinner tonight is at our hotel.
