Seven Marine used the Miami Boat Show to reveal its latest mega-outboard, the Seven Marine 627, a 627 HP beauty that takes outboard power to a new level. Since Seven Marine debuted its 557 model in 2011, the boutique outboard builder based in Wisconsin has made steady inroads at the super-premium end of the market. Those motors were displayed on some of the biggest, classiest boats at this year’s Miami show, including a quartet hung on the transom of the new Hydra-Sports 53 Suenos. The Seven 627 was not in the water at Miami and pricing wasn’t revealed, but production should begin early this summer. We did get a close look at this motor and filmed a quick video, so here's a quick overview of this new powerplant.

Like the 557, the new 627 uses the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 GM LSA Gen 4 engine, which can also be found under the hood of high-performance Cadillac automobiles. With a goal of broadening the torque band to better power heavier boats, Seven Marine has modified the cylinder heads to create more turbulence in the combustion chambers. New inconel exhaust valves better withstand high temperatures and permit a leaner air-fuel mixture at mid-range speeds, to boost cruise economy. The result, according to Seven Marine president Rick Davis, is a gain of about 50 foot-pounds of torque – the 627 pumps out 600 foot-pounds from 3000 rpm to WOT at 5500 rpm – and 70 more at peak horsepower. And it makes that power on 89 octane fuel.

The fact that each Seven Marine outboard weighs more than 1,000 pounds does not seem to be an issue on really big boats. In the past year, Seven has added a new twin-prop CR gear case to provide the blade area required to move heavier boats, in addition to its standard case (good for 80 mph) and a crescent-shaped GT gear case for speed boats. here

According to a release from the company, the product expansion marks Seven Marine’s fifth anniversary, assuring its leadership position through proprietary innovations targeted at the fast-growing “super console” (42 feet and above) outboard-powered segment.

Arguably one of the biggest news items in the performance marine engine world to come from the Miami International Boat Show was the announcement of the new 627 outboard engines from Seven Marine.

At the same time, the outboards never feel harsh, vibration is non-existent, and thanks to the supercharger, the power delivery is linear – it’s like turning on a tap. [links]

There is quite a long run down the Tamaki River to the open sea, most of it at five knots. Fortunately, the ZF controls modulate the amount of clutch slip, which allows the vessel to trickle along at five knots with the engines idling in gear. Without slip it would be much faster. here

With outboards of this size, fuel economy is probably moot, but decent figures are achievable. At 30 knots each engine was burning 60 litres an hour, rising to 220 litres per hour at 40 knots. The Everglades carries 1,500 litres of fuel and the tank was three-quarters full on demo day.

Acceleration is awe-inspiring, but it’s the accompanying soundtrack from two sets of dual exhausts, overlaid by the high-pitched whine of the superchargers, that is truly out of this world! At full noise the engines sound like a supersonic jetliner taking off. [links]
