I have run a manual jack plate before on my other boat; and that is one of the things I too noticed. Lot more bow rise but I don't have the ability to trim while under way. If you have trim, that problem disappears for the most part.

My next boat mod will be trim. whether it be a CMC or Panter or whatever brand, or it be a new motor. It will have trim/tilt eventually. I'm getting too old and lazy to manually tilt that big heavy 4 stroke motor. I can kick it in reverse with the tilt unlocked and that works but only if I have the space. Sometimes theres areas where I can't do that, like, say, a stump or log is right behind the motor which would hit while the boat is backing up slightly.

A heavier Jon boat will require a bigger hp engine to provide the thrust needed to propel the boat. So many hunters, who take lots of gear and dogs, choose bigger engines. Likewise those who use their Jon boats for boat camping will also tend to opt for more power as they laden their boat with passengers, gear and supplies. here

To ensure your Jon boat has the needed thrust to provide you with power and speed it is recommend you use a motor with 5 lb of thrust for every 200 lb gross boat weight.

The extra thrust offered by a larger outboard motor will mean it is easier to achieve good speeds on a Jon and get the boat on plane for that extra ultra smooth fast cruising. more

Trolling motors will usually offer just enough power to push a Jon a boat upstream but it won’t offer you much speed and it is doubtful you will get the boat on plane. more

You should get a motor with a shaft length that matches the length of your transom. [links]

Wow im confused some people are saying the cavitation plate should 1" below the transom & others are saying it should be 1" above. Which is right? [links]

9. Anti-ventilation Plate height above the bottom of the transom of boat if it is an outboard in inches, use a straight edge or a board under the keel and sticking out to the anti ventilation plate for a reference, and take about 4 pictures for us to see. [links]

The AV plate should be even with to about an inch higher than the bottom of the transom.

The prop must be below the bottom of the transom. Actually, we look at where the anti-ventilation plate (often call a cavitation plate) is relative to the bottom. Ventilation is what your prop was doing. . . .grabbing air and trying to run in the resulting foam.

There should be an aluminum plate in the transom area that gives the maximum weight and HP rating for your Jon Boat. Now, quite a few people go overweight (seemingly without incident but it’s there for a reason!). One thing you definitely don’t want to do is buy a motor larger than is specified.

If you’re going to go ten miles there and back – get an outboard motor. You can go all day on a gallon of gas. Although battery powered motors are improving, they usually have a much shorter range and distance. more

Of course, the heavier the boat, gear and people, the more HP you’re going to need. Unfortunately, it’s easy to overload a Jon Boat so this is one area you really do need need to take care with.
