High-build Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat can fill tiny scratches, but it’s not a filler. For scratches, deformations, dents, and dings 1 ⁄16” deep or greater, use TotalFair epoxy fairing putty first, then sand smooth and overcoat.

Allow 48 hours for Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat to dry, then sand with 320-grit sandpaper. Remove sanding residue with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep and let flash. Apply topcoat according to directions.

Corrosion on metal boats and boat parts is a certainty. In saltwater and in warmer temperatures, even stainless steel is subject to crevice corrosion, which forms anywhere water can enter, but can’t exit, such as boat propeller and shaft assemblies. Crevice corrosion also eats aluminum alloys wherever there’s a juncture that lets saltwater enter, such as any place where objects are attached to the aluminum surface above or below the waterline.

For best adhesion, use the ‘thumbprint’ method mentioned above. Overcoat with antifouling paint within the specified time window. If the specified overcoat window for antifouling paint is missed, wait 24 hours and sand with 80-grit sandpaper, then wipe the surface clean with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep. Allow the solvent wipe to evaporate completely before applying any paint. TotalBoat AlumiPaint AF offers superior protection against fouling on aluminum hulls and pontoons. For underwater metals, apply TotalBoat Outdrive AF antifouling paint. [links]

Today, one day later, I just went out and scrapped with the same knife the same test patch. The latex is much harder. It can be scrapped down to the epoxy, but with much more effort. Yesterday I left a wet rag on another test patch, a patch that was applied the day previous. It scrapped off easily, confirming what some of you have been writing.

the only logical reason to use house paint is that youre the type of boat owner who like to keep his boat looking good so he repaints every spring or your boat get worked so hard during the season that you have no choice but to repaint.

I remember being unable to walk with bare feet on the deck on my Huckins, during the mid day sun when painted with white with undercoat.
The matt surface absorbed the heat, making it unbearably hot..
The subsequent glossy top coats kept the deck quite cool.

Thank you all for your experiences. Now for another question or two.

Determining the paint system you are going to use on your boat, really comes down to considering these factors: time, effort, and budget.

One-part paints
Traditional one-part paint (or alkyd enamel) can be applied ‘straight from the can’. This product will dry reasonably fast by solvent evaporation and/or by reacting with oxygen or moisture in the air. It’s easy to apply and has very good weathering characteristics. The alkyd (oil resin base) can be modified for gloss, hardness or longevity by using additives.
More alkyd enamels are still used than any other type as excellent finishes can be obtained from them with a minimum amount of effort. more

Two-part paints
Two-part aliphatic polyurethanes are obtained by mixing two components according to a given ratio. Those parts start a chemical reaction that forms a chemically cured surface. Once the two parts are mixed, you can only use it for a set amount of time.
In comparison, two-part products dry quicker and have better properties: gloss, color retention, hardness, longevity, chemical and abrasion resistance, and overall film integrity as you vary the chemistry.
