Garden is a place that people use for different purposes. Some people like to read their morning newspaper in the garden. Some people can study better in their garden. Some people have a habit of having their evening tea in this part of the house and some people love hanging out with family and friends outdoors, rather than indoors.

Reading under a tree can help you feel relaxed and peaceful. Sitting under the shade of a tree and enjoying cool breeze can help you forget your worries and get lost in the moment. Tree garden benches can make the reading experience under a tree more comfortable and enjoyable. These types of garden benches are specially designed so that the seating is around the trunk of the tree. This way, the tree trunk is in the mid with seating all around it. You can sit comfortably on the bench and enjoy the shade of the tree even during a bright sunny day.

This is a unique design of garden benches. It has been named after Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect who came up with this design. These garden benches are only available in small sizes. They look extremely elegant in the garden. They add a touch of style, sophistication, and beauty to the gardens they are placed in. [links]

Companion garden benches are an intimate bench for two people. They are joined in the center with a small table area. If you want a bench in your garden where you can talk and spend some peaceful hours with someone special, companion garden benches are the thing for you.

Wooden benches are the best and most popular option for garden seating. They are the most natural and well-blended furniture for the garden. They go perfectly well in the gardens and blend flawlessly with the overall surroundings. They don’t look out-of-place. The best quality wood benches are the ones that are made with lumber with center-cut heartwood having consistent grain. Parts of the bench should be screwed with stainless steel or zinc screws. These screws allow tightening easier in case the bench ever goes loose.

Just like the first four species of exterior hardwoods that we recommended, Massaranduba naturally resists rot, decay and wood boring insects.

Once this occurs the wood is left unprotected and when it rains the wood usually stays saturated for an extended time period making them often undesirable to sit on.

In our years of experience selling exterior lumber for decks and other exterior projects we’ve seen too many complaints from homeowners to make us comfortable selling any plastic lumber for now. more

Many people find the maintenance to be too much work, so their outdoor bench gets neglected as shown in the picture below. here

Outdoor benches are most commonly made with pressure treated pine or cedar. The problem with these species is they are soft woods that generally require annual maintenance and application of a water sealer.

Similar to the other woods we listed above Tigerwood is also resistant to wood boring insects, mold and mildew and does not splinter. This is another excellent low maintenance exterior wood material that works great for benches, decks, fences, siding and more. [links]

You can go with pine. nice clear shelf stuff. If you want strength you can laminate plywood under it or bracing in the center.

I have a 1966 14' Starcraft tinnie that still has the original bench seats. The wood measures .75" x 11.25" (1" x 12" I am guessing) and I think it is redwood or teak. I am looking to replace the wood but need ideas on what to use. I had thought about using plywood and painting it, but I really like the finished look of what is on there now (except that it's starting to rot). It also needs to be fairly strong as I can't go any thicker than whats there because of the size of the mounting brackets. What types of wood hold up well in this application? I may just go with plywood to keep it cheap, but I wanted some input on what others have done. more

With species that have high natural resistance to rot you don't have to do anything to them for them to endure outdoors, this is one of the reasons for using them in the first place. [links]

Not just natural wood
In addition to natural woods there are now treated woods such as Accoya which offer the same sort of durability. Cost and availability can be a problem, but they do come with a guarantee which other woods do not! here

Cedar is also a good choice if you would like your bench to match your house or other furnishings, since it paints and stains well. In fact, yearly cleaning and sealing of cedar are recommended, as the soft grain becomes rough over time if left untreated. here

A garden bench adds the perfect finishing touch to a landscaped yard. At the end of a meandering path or under a favorite tree, a comfortable bench provides a place to sit and contemplate nature, to unwind from the pressures of daily life.

While garden benches and other outdoor furniture can be made from a range of materials, it’s hard to beat natural wood for warmth and beauty. When using wood for outside furniture, it’s important to choose a durable, weather-resistant wood.

Left in a natural state, cedar weathers to an elegant silvery gray over time. Bear in mind that cedar is rather soft, so it will dent and scratch more easily than harder woods like shorea or teak. Paradoxically, since cedar retains moisture, rather than drying out, it’s more resistant to cracking than many other woods.
