We have often said, to really understand an island you must go out in a boat and look back. Boating and Islands just go together — to really see a place and know a place you must get away from it. It gives perspective to size, topography and foliage, and when you go to land, you really explore what makes an island tick. Just ask any pirate. The best part of any island are the hidden beaches, protected coves, tiny villages and little beach bars often unreachable other than by boat. There are countless special places only boaters know about and only boaters can get to, whether on a yacht, a sailboat or a pleasure boat. These are the best Caribbean islands for boating.

Because of its proximity to South Florida, it’s easy to take your boat here, whether on your own or with flotillas of boats — and once you get here, there are 700 islands to choose from, from the Abacos chain to Eleuthera to the Exumas. This is boating paradise. If you come here without a boat, you’re not seeing the whole Bahamas.

Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow is synonymous with his "captain" title, but which ships does he actually command in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies?

Born into piracy, Jack was a prodigious talent in his youth, and after a brief stint with the East India Trading Company, Jack resumed his buccaneering ways, and the 18th century's answer to Keith Richards hasn't looked back since. But which ships and crews were unlucky enough to call Captain Jack Sparrow their leader?

The Interceptor serves as Jack's replacement ship during his first true voyage in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but when the protagonists finally catch up to Barbossa and the Black Pearl, their fortunes take a turn. Proving its reputation for swiftness is not without merit, the Black Pearl catches the Interceptor and Jack's ragtag crew are taken aboard his old ship, with not much in the way of friendly welcome. After taking the crew hostage, Barbossa orders the Interceptor destroyed, and the ship is never seen again in Pirates of the Caribbean.

You do not want to be constantly moving out of the way anytime anyone needs to move to a different area of the vessel if that’s not what you are comfortable with. Especially not when you are planning on staying on the boat full time.

They often have waiting lists that can go on for years. If you choose to live in a liveaboard marina, make sure you have a spot, before you invest in a boat.

These boats have wide hulls, less draft, and hard chines. A hard chine means that there is little rounding in the front of the hull and is often a harder angle. These boats can have single or twin engines depending on need. more

Again, privacy is extremely important when you are setting off on a boat full-time.

The design of the multi-hull is also good to keep out noise from engines if you have one. Because the engine is often placed in the middle, neither hull is immediately next to it. Unlike a single hull vessel where the engine is situated on the back and can often disrupt quiet living conditions.

Christopher was immediately enchanted by Zanzibar. “It’s a beautiful and culturally rich tropical island, with an unusual history that includes slavery, colonialism and revolution”, he says. Unguja and Pemba are home to an abundance of tropical fruits like mangoes, coconuts and breadfruit, as well as a great variety of spices like pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. The main town, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is home to an amazing collection of doorways. The people are super friendly.” [links]

The Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar lies off the east coast of Africa, comprising two large islands and a series of smaller islets. The bigger of the islands is officially called Unguja, though it’s commonly known as Zanzibar. While crystal-clear waters lap its idyllic beaches, the island’s bustling trade centre is a diverse melting-pot of Swahili, Arab and Indian influences.

Around four kilometres from this bustling hub is the fishing village of Maruhubi, and a former sultan’s palace; another must-see for anyone visiting the island. In the village, locals enjoy a traditional way of life, with the men crafting fishing boats by hand. London-based photographer Christopher Wilton-Steer recently found himself on this beautiful part of the island, having visited Zanzibar as part of a local assignment. “I'm fascinated by other cultures and interested in photography that educates, demystifies, and challenges perceptions”, he tells Lonely Planet. “Ultimately, I hope my work inspires others to take the road less travelled, and encounter new people, places and cultures.” more

In Maruhubi, Christopher met and photographed some of the local fishermen. “I was amazed to see that the boats, even the big ones, were all hand-made”, he says. “They typically take about six months to construct, with between one and four people working on each boat using hand-driven drills, chisels and rustic mallets. They’re usually made from mango or mahogany wood, of which there’s an abundance in Zanzibar.” Did he take away any learnings from the villagers’ way of life? “I think we could all benefit from putting more energy into doing fewer things well.” [links]
