A safer method of starting a generator if you don’t have a functioning recoil cord assembly is to find a small rope (it could be the majority of what might be left from your recoil cord assembly) about 4′-6′ in length and make an overhand not on one end. [links]

Some people recommend wearing gloves in this process, but I come from a work background where I won’t put a gloved hand in front of a moving power tool — no matter how safe I’ve tried to render it. more

Gloves, especially loose-fitting ones can become caught and drag your hand into places you don’t want it to go. A drill with an empty chuck will probably be alright, but I will stick with my safety philosophy. You are free to choose what you’d like to do. If the drill chuck had grooves that were too sharp on my hand, I would opt for a tight pair of leather gloves. more

If you start up your generator and the engine is running just fine but there is no power output, you might be able to save the day with a corded drill (depending on the problem).

The AVR is responsible for sensing the output being produced by the generator and bringing it to a predetermined amount (120v, 240v, etc.). more

Let me start off by saying that I don’t support this method. I don’t like it. I don’t want anything to do with it if I can help it. here

this subject has been burnt out so many times do a search and you will find several threads covering mostly the negative aspects of using a electric drill for starting glow or gas engines. [links]

I didn't think of Darrol's suggestion of using a PVC end cap filled with silicone caulk but it would be a very cheap way to try it. The Sullivan parts I mentioned would cost $20 or more.

I To Was Looking For Something To Be Able to Use A Cordless Or Even A Corded Drill Well I came up with a idea I Took A Holesaw Froma hardware storethe same size as the starter cup I Purchased from towerhobbies Took the hole saw and bored out two holes in a peice of of plywoodthis peiceneeds to be at least 1/2 inch the circle plug that sticks in the hole saw permantly for a mount base to mount the starter cup to make sure you find a hole saw that has the clean out slots running straight with saw and not at angle the reason is that once you mount the cup to the circle peice of wood you cut you slide the whole thing into the hole saw and put screws in through the clean outslots and make sure when puchasing the holesaw and arbor set the arbor needed to be the locking type to allow you to use this adapter in reverseand we wont be using the center bit that the hole sawarbor came withthe second peice you cut will be for a spare or to add a bare prop srarter tool For Safety to your model and you please grind off theteeth of holesaw once youhave cut your mounts Recomened gluing the mounts in as well if you need another starter cup size you can just get one more of the same holesaws you already setupthen you got a multi size starter kit all you have to do is change to holesaw or arbor by unlocking and unscewing them

Exactly what is it that you want to start? Gasoline power, or glow fuel? more

However when used for the smaller glow airplanes its a fact many will one hand the starter with the other hand on the airplane. A pistol grip used in this manner is very much a hazard. with the ergonomics completely wrong.

If you want to match the Tiger Drive cover to the rest of your car, Sullivan offers a six-pack of the covers in colors (S688). Or, you can get an aluminum version (S690) that helps provide additional engine cooling. [links]

To start the engine, just prime the carburetor and install the glowplug heater as you normally would with a pull start, then insert the shaft into the Tiger Drive and activate the drill. Note that the drill must be set to turn clockwise to turn the crankshaft; if it’s set to turn counter-clockwise, the one-way bearing won’t spin the shaft. Once the engine is running, the one-way bearing will allow the crank to turn faster than the drill, so there’s no need to yank out the shaft quickly.

To spin the Tiger Drive, you’ll need a 7/32 shaft. Sullivan offers a starter shaft (S686) with an aluminum adapter to fit their Hi-Tork and Dynatron starters, but you can also use an electric drill to spin the shaft, as we are. A pair of 2mm screws secure the adapter to the shaft, simply remove them and slide the adapter off the shaft. Now you can chuck the shaft into a drill. Make sure you put the “plain” end into the drill. The ball end goes into the Tiger Drive.

The Tiger Drive is simple. It replaces the pull starter with a pair of bevel gears, allowing you to spin the crankshaft and fire the engine using a 7/32 hex shaft. Once the engine is spinning, the one-way bearing in the drive gear allows the shaft to spin freely rather than spinning the Tiger Drive gears. more

As nitro-engine starting systems go, pull-starters are definitely the least desirable option. On the plus side, they’re cheap; on the down side, well, everything else. They aren’t reliable, they’re not comfortable to use, and if you’ve ever taken one apart, you know what a hassle it can be to get the spring-genie back into the bottle. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to replace a pull starter with much more convenient shaft starting, and that’s with a Sullivan Tiger Drive.
