how do I know if my trailer brakes are working? The thing is, it's not always easy to tell which (if any) trailer brakes are working just by pressing the pedal during a test drive. Instead, you'll want to look for a slide bar on your brake controller. It should go from 0 to 10 or will have an indicator light.

A 7-Way has these functions and a 12 volt circuit, a circuit for electric trailer brakes (requires a brake controller in the vehicle), and a reverse light or auxiliary power circuit. There are other types of connectors as well.

Also, where is the ground on a 7 pin trailer plug?

On the trailer side the ground wire would be in the 7 oclock position. more

Disconnect the wires at their corresponding components at both ends using a screwdriver. Connect a jumper wire between one wire end and the car frame. Connect the red positive probe of the multimeter to the other end of the same wire; connect the multimeter's black probe to the car frame.

Automobiles contain many different types of circuits. Each circuit uses electrical wires to carry both power and signal information to other components. Over time, these wires can become damaged due to misuse, accidents and component failure. These failures can cause both short circuits and open circuits---both of which render the wires unusable. The hardest part of fixing a wire involves locating the defective one---a process with which a multimeter can help. Multimeters are designed to test different parts of a circuit to locate the problem.

Set the multimeter to measure resistance; it should read zero resistance. If the meter reads "Open Circuit" or some other very high reading, the wire is bad and requires replacement.

Remove the jumper wire, and retest the wire. With the jumper wire removed, no part of the wire should contact the car frame. In this case, the meter should read "Open Circuit." If not, a short has occurred in the wire, and it requires replacement. Repeat this process for each wire. more

Turn on the multimeter and set its function to the lowest setting for ohms (resistance). If you are using an analog device, hold the two probes together as you adjust the meter’s needle to “0.”

A variety of home electrical problems can cause appliances to malfunction or stop working, but homeowners often assume that the appliance itself is defective. Before throwing away an appliance, test it with a multimeter. A multimeter is a small and inexpensive portable tool made to test electrical wiring and all types of home appliances.

Attach alligator clips to the multimeter probes.

Access the appliance element you want to test. This process will vary widely depending on appliance. For testing smaller appliances such as blenders and toasters, you will only need to access the electrical plug. For testing larger appliances such as stoves or refrigerators, you may need to remove a panel and/or remove individual components from the appliance to test them. more
