After cutting, I test-fit the seats so I could mark the holes for their new hardware. Didn't want to drill any new holes anywhere if I didn't have to. here

When painting camouflage, you need 1 main base color (Oregano for me), a couple more colors for major breakup (Nutmeg & Leafy Green), and then some accent colors to look like shadows, movement, and foliage. You don't want to overdo it on the darker ones (especially in a marsh) but you do need some. I like Espresso, Hunt Club Green (same as marine Sea Green) and some thin stripes of black.

I got the transom bolted in through all the same old holes. Added some stainless fender washers to the middle holes, where the wobbling engine had made the old holes into ovals. [links]

Valco boats are like Grumman canoes: thick aluminum made to aircraft specs from when America was Great Before. I'd take a riveted Valco or Grumman over a modern "welded" boat made from recycled Bud cans any day.

I'd also pre-drilled the seats for these holes (1/4"-20 instead of #10 like the other hardware) and they installed easliy.

If you're not able to do the work yourself or unable to afford to pay someone else to do it, then I'd recommend either parking it until you can or selling it and getting a boat that doesn't need that level of work. A rotted transom is an accident waiting to happen. more

A friend of mine brought a boat by to have me look at the motor. The transom had stainless plates on it due to a rotted transom core. What the transom plates don't account for is compression forces - the motor got loose, sheared one of the mounting bolts and slid over on its side on the transom while we were testing the motor. The core wood had gotten compressed, .ie thinner, and the mounting bolts and clamp screws loosened up.

Either do it right or scrap the boat. There is no shortcut.

To do it "right", you need to fix it right. That involves replacing the transom. Putting stainless plates on the transom is NOT fixing it right.

Got a new Lowe 1448 jon. I asked the dealer whether or not the transom needed to be reinforced. He replied the boat was rated to carry up to 25 HP engines and that wood can be added to the outside of the transom. However, he explained, the wood only serves as a protector for the paint.

If it doesn't have a knee brace, adding one would be the best use of resources. here

How about a picture of the transom? here
