Question: Can I buy service parts for Tuff Torq transaxles?
Question: Where is the serial number located? [links]
Answer: This stands for Internal Reservoir Housing. In other words, the K46 IRH models actually have more oil capacity than the NON-IRH K46 models. This is why the NON-IRH models have external oil reservoir tanks.
I thought I would post this for anyone that has a Husky YTH 150 tractor with a Hydro Gear 319-0650 transaxle.
I noticed my tractor was getting a bit sluggish when I put it into reverse. I looked up a lot of information on the net about this transaxle and found it it was meant to be a non serviceable unit and worse yet, the unit is no longer available. That said a number of folks have removed the transaxle, dumped the old fluid out of it and replaced it with 20W-50 motor oil. This seemed to work for many folks but I really didn't want to get into removing the tranny. I did however decide to at least take a look at the thing so I removed the rear panel on the frame. (The one that the bypass control lever sticks through). There was only 4 bolts holding it in place so I figured what the heck. [links]
The whole project took about 45 minutes.
I do not understand why Hydro-Gear builds a hydraulic pump that runs on motor oil. Are they smarter than Detroit, Stuttgart, and Tokyo. Then they seal the system so it keeps all the metal particles for life. This gearbox HAS TO FAIL, it is only a matter of time. At the very least they should recommend a fluid with antifoaming properties, that resists emulsification. If I bought a new transaxle, I would change the fluid to Valvoline #555 before I installed it. more
I don't know the weight of the gear oil you used but assuming it's 80/90 this may overpressure the transaxle and blow seals. Time will tell. If the manufacturer says 20w-50 then that's what I would use. Yes, they know best, they made it. Also, if the gear oil is GL-5 it contains sulphur which will destroy brass parts, if any, in the transaxle. Troy-Bilt tiller owners, like me for example, are very aware of this and spend lots of time trying to find GL-1 gear oil. more
A Hydro-Gear Tech told me that the Trans needed to be purged of air (raise the rear off the ground, activate the hydrostatic bypass, start engine and shift forward and back several times) This was no help.
Once again I pulled the tranaxle, and drained the 20W50 oil. It was emulsified with air, even though I had let it sit for a day.
