Once the carb has been disassembled, clean every part thoroughly. This is the most important step. We recommend Quicksilver Power Tune and Sierra Carbon Free Aerosol to make this critical stage of the process easier. [links]

Disassemble the carburetor. Lay each component on a clean shop towel it will make reassembly go much faster. It will also be easier to determine what needs to be replaced and which components just need a cleaning. Set the needle and seat aside. here

Guys maybe you can give me a little help before I take this motor into the shop. I have a 1996 Johnson 90 V4 VRO outboard. I was having some problems with the oil/fuel mixture alarm going off so I just had the VRO pump replaced and it ran fine on a trip out for halibut fishing about 2 weeks ago. Only problem is the low idle, it always has a tendency to cut /stall out (even after changing the VRO pump). Fine I could live with it, as long as I slowly backed off the throttle things were okay. Today I go to take it out for a fishinf trip and the motor wont go to full throttle. Sounds like it is running on only 3 cylinders. No alarms to signal over heating, low oil/fuel or anything , starts up okay. Cant see obvious fuel leaks.
1. The compression is excellent had it checked when I had the VRO pump changed.
2.Checked the water separator and no water present in the fuel.
3. Although stored during the winter time I always fog the cylinders and put more than the recommended amount of fuel stabilizer in the tank.
4. While idling to check the plugs I pulled the wire off of each one and each time the rpm dropped and went up again once the wire was reattached. so the plugs are okay. [links]

Im thinking the power pack is starting to fail at high RPM. Does anybody out there have any experience with these motors? Just wondering if there is anything else I should look for before taking it in? Am I missing anything obvious. Thanks. more

Rest the roller on the throttle cam and turn the idle stop screw until the curved front edge of the throttle cam aligns with the center of the roller. Re-tighten the idle stop screw lock nut. here

Loosen the cam follower roller screw, allowing the follower to move without restriction.

Hold the throttle arm against the idle stop. Reposition the cam follower so that there is a gap of between 0.00 inch and 0.10 inch.between the roller and throttle cam. Hold the cam follower in this position and re-tighten the cam follower screw.

Locate the idle stop screw, located halfway down the throttle lever, and loosen its lock nut.

The out of water idle speed can very tremendously. Mine will run 1250-1400 rpm if run on a hose. here

I bought the boat last September and before putting it in the water, I had my mechanic clean and adjust the fuel system. At that time, he also installed a RACOR. I use Startron with every fill up, but haven't decarbed. Actually, on 1 tank last season ( I only filled up 3 times) I ran a pint of OMC Carbon guard.

Idle is adjusted by adjusting idle timing. Timing sspec is about 6 deg after TDC to get the right RPM. Check it with a timing lite to see what it is now at 500 rpm. To make it run faster you adjust timing to be more advanced as in going in the direction "before" TDC, so if too slow it may be 8 or 10 ATDC, so then adjust to get it to 6 ATDC, and if way off in RPM, something is wrong like an intake air leak. To get your 650 or so in forward gear underway, timing should be 6 ATDC plus or minus 2 deg, or so.

I need to increase the idle on my '93 Evinrude 200 (carb). It idles around 500 in neutral and eventually stalls out. I was told that I should increase it to about 750 RPM in neutral and 600 RPM in gear. I have already checked for air leaks and that wasn't the problem. Also, when I increase the idle from the controls at the helm, she runs fine.

The idle should be set while in the water to 650 plus or minus 50 rpm. The timing should read 4 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees ATDC. here
