The MAX Orange Line is a light rail service in Portland, Oregon, United states, operated by TriMet as part of the MAX Light Rail system. It connects Portland City Center in the north to Portland State University (PSU), Southeast Portland, Milwaukie, and Oak Grove in the south. The line originates near Portland Union Station and runs as a southbound only service of the Portland Transit Mall on 5th Avenue. From there, it travels a total of 7.3 miles (11.7 km) through the South Waterfront, across the Willamette River into Southeast Portland, and further south to Oak Grove, just outside of Milwaukie proper in unincorporated Clackamas County. The line serves 17 stations between Union Station/Northwest 5th & Glisan and Southeast Park Avenue. In 2007, the company entered the field of streetcar (tram) manufacturing, after being awarded a contract, in January 2007, by the City of Portland for the provision of a prototype U.S.-manufactured streetcar for the Portland Streetcar system. [2] The company had signed a technology transfer agreement with Škoda, of the Czech Republic, in February 2006, enabling it to offer to build the already existing Škoda 10 T design, under license from the Czech manufacturer. [7] Upon being awarded the contract, OIW created a new subsidiary, United Streetcar, LLC, for its streetcar manufacturing activity. The prototype streetcar was completed and delivered in mid-2009, and in August 2009 United Streetcar received a contract from the City of Portland for another six 10T streetcars. [8] The announcement of a second order for production-series vehicles soon followed, from the City of Tucson, Arizona. [9] Washington D.C. also ordered two cars from United in April 2012 [10] and a third in August 2012.
