Volvo penta sx cobra raw water pump
See full version: Volvo Raw Water Pump Not Priming From Drive
I've previously rebuilt volvo water pumps, replaced with new pump, replaced seals to strainer, all on the Blackman. Seals at strainer are on the pressure side and leaks there result in water leaks. I'm thinking this is on the suction side. If it's new water pump, then I'm basically done for the season due to the time involved vs other commitments.

5) Put back together and repeated 1) and nothing.
Followed your entire regimen, save for the plug. Need to shape a wine cork for that. Opened strainer and filled with water (see video) then ran the engine. I get a little geyser in the strainer cup, but it's just bubbles being pushed by the impeller. Never primed. here

Yes tried forcing water to the pump with cover off, no success. Pulled hose to pump and tried to force water from drive out. Did this by myself, so could not observe it as I was holding muffs tight to the drive. Based on the water in the bilge, this worked. more

1) Held muffs onto the drive and put a finger over the pee hole on front of gear housing.
Pump cover has the o-ring and is not worn. I will check the cam. more
For "whatever reason" I can't "Post a New Topic" on Boatered.com. I really need the help of someone familiar with a Ford 460cu.in.(7.5L) engine and also with the V-belt driven Volvo-Penta water pump I have (V-P Part# 3851700). It is hard for me to believe that this conversion hasn't been done before because of the "ease" of bolting up the V-P SX Cobra sterndrive to my engine. Also, all the parts problems that OMC has and Volvo-Penta does not have. Suggestions Please. [links]

Thanks for the prompt response. I have learned that this Volvo-Penta SX Cobra setup is sold as an "upgrade" but I can't determine as an "upgrade" from WHAT. All I know is there is a "crankshaft driven" external waterpump available from V-P and from a company called "Sierra" but this won't work in my case because there isn't room in the engine compartment for that pump to bolt onto my crankshaft. here
You have to check to see if volvo ever used the SX drive with the Ford 460. I know they used the Chevy 454 with it, but I have not heard of a Ford 460 with the Volvo SX. Check through the diagrams on doug russell marine to see if you can find a bracket that will work or can be modified to fit. This may have to be a custom job. You might want to ask George Van Parys over on Boatered.com to see what he thinks.

Yeah, a hose would be pushing water, whether the impeller was working or not. So you need the sterndrive unit in a tub, or lake, in order to see if it pumps on it's own.

from my experiences last summer, I believe I have it narrowed down to several possible causes:
1) transom shield water tube
2) raw water pump
I tried to eliminate the transom shield water tube by seeing if I could pull a vacuum from the raw water pump inlet tube to the pivot housing inlet (the drive is off) using the mightyvac I got at advance auto. I taped of the big plastic nut and hooked up the mightyvac to the pump inlet hose. Nothing.
