Luckily for all drivers, you can tell when your car has blown a fuse. Detecting a damaged fuse is one of the first steps in figuring out what prevents the engine from starting. Analyzing and diagnosing the broken fuse’s location can help you prevent the “car won’t start but lights on” scenario in your vehicle. here

If you determine if the fuse is in good shape, then the real problem is the car’s ignition switch . The ignition switch is the electrical switch inside that your key touches when the mechanical part is inserted into the ignition. In some situations, the ignition switch can only give the electrical components power and avoid the engine starter. If this is the case with your ignition switch, you can experience the “car won’t start but lights come on” situation.

If your car won’t start, but lights come on, and the radio is turning on, it could be a few different problems. The most likely culprit for this issue usually deals with the battery. The reason why the radio, the dashboard warning lights, the headlights, and other electrical components can get power while the engine cannot has to do with an interrupted path of flow of power directed towards the engine.

Signs of a ground cable problem in your include dim lights, flickering lights, electrical devices turning on and off, a faulty fuel pump, clutch slipping in the AC compressor, intermittent sensor failure, damaged throttle or damaged cables, and hard starting. Along with all of these issues, you may also find that you experience the loss of ability to start and a dead battery, all of which can cause the “car won’t start, but lights come on” situation.

The signs of a faulty fuse are that your accessories will lose power, the damaged fuse will appear broken or disconnected, or circuits start to overload. This can cause your engine not to turn over but your lights to come on. here

Software updates are performed by the dealer and, in some cases, can fix this problem. Call your dealer and ask if there are any software updates for your particular Volvo. You will need to provide your VIN, which is located at the lower-left corner of the windshield. [links]

This error message comes up if you turn off the engine but leave on the key. All the accessories, dashboard, lights consume power from the battery when the engine is off. To prevent the battery, your Volvo may turn off on its own. This error message is likely to come up more often if:
- your only do short trips,
- during cold weather,
- your Volvo battery is old. [links]

If you keep getting a Low Battery message at startup, you may need to replace the battery. Perform a battery test. Most auto part stores will test your battery and charging system free of charge. You can also test the charging system yourself. It's straightforward to test the charging system with a battery tester. here

Your Volvo has over 20 modules. One or more of the modules in the car may be drawing excessive current. For example, the Volvo satellite module is known to cause an excessive current draw. [links]

Ignition switch malfunctioning. When you insert the key, which is an electronic key the message display will display "key error try again. " when this happens the car will not start at all. Thus far repeatedly jiggling the key fob while in the switch, and/or turning on/off multiple times gets the system to eventually recognize the key. There are 2 keys to my car and this happens with both keys, so I know it isn't the key. I have researched this online and found it to be a common problem. This problem will let me remove the key, but the radio and interior lights stay on, and I can't lock the car. This happens sporadically, but on average once a week. here

I own a 2005 Volvo S40 t5 which I have enjoyed thus far. However every once in a while when you insert the key, which is an electronic key the message display will display "key error try again. " when this happens the car will not start at all, nothing inside the car including the radio will work either. After 20 to 30 times trying to start the car the key will eventually start the car. There are 2 keys to my car and this happens with both keys, so I know it isn't the key. I have researched this online and found it to be a common problem. This happens sporadically for example it will happen several times over a week or so and then not happen for several months. It recently started about a week ago and has happened everyday since. It is embarrassing to be in such a nice car and it not start. Sometimes when this happens, in addition to the "key error try again" message the message display will also display messages including "brake failure, stop car safely" and "immobilizer see manual. " the brakes are fine, because they work on the way home and work while this message is displayed. The computer in the car was reset and that seemed to help temporarily, but I believe it is an electrical problem since the car does not recognize the key. I would appreciate this matter being investigated and recalled if possible. [links]
