The family at one particular pier is always anxiously waiting. Says the mother of the house, "It's the highlight of the day. Every morning, they wait … and they watch for the boat coming. They run down to the water, and everybody gets into position, and it's great.

The return of the mailboat means the return of the mail jumpers, who must perform a standing broad jump from the moving boat, sprint through obstacles on the docks, deliver and pick up mail, then make a mad dash and a last leap for the back of the boat. It's a spectator sport, as anyone who's jumped the mail can tell you. more

Jackson was joined on the opening day roster by a handful of veterans, one of whom hopes to work her way up from the snack bar this season. [links]

"(They) dash down and come out on the end and do this for captain Neill, and when he toots, everyone jumps up and down, and it's Christmas morning. Day after day," Craven chuckles. more

To remove a seacock, I cut a piece of the hull material the same diameter & epoxy it in, then screw & epoxy a backing block the same size as the old one - but without a hole.

None taken Phil. What does Roger Taylor say in "The Elements of Seamanship"? The book is not handy at the moment but something to the effect that not sinking is the ultimate test of good seamanship. (Or, conversely, that sinking is the one sure way to know that seamanship has failed). Everything else is just for style.

A one inch hole three feet down allows 37 gpm.

To avoid a possible "flood", can you perhaps plug the hole on the outside of the hull with, say, a wooden plug, and then work on (or replace) the valve? more

I wondered about that little white loop myself. Rest assured, it's just a little plug that's in a little holder. You can pull it out without flooding the boat. It's a scary moment, but nothing bad will happen. (if something bad does happen, just quickly stuff it back in there!)

The Handle:
The handle on the seacock is attached to the valve ball by a star shaped post on the valve ball. The valve handle is attached to the valve ball by a very small sheet metal screw that threads into the ball. The screw is under the white plug. [links]

We would like to stay at the same marina as we fish together a lot. He is leaning towards in water and I thought I would like dry stack storage. I could be ok with in water if I know fully all the maintenance that is going to be required for that. I like the idea of just throwing some stuff in the truck and heading to the boat. I understand with dry stack I would be limited in hours of operation of the lifts to get the boat in and out.

Kind of tired of towing the boat 100+ miles each way and I find it discouraged me from using the boat as much as I would like in the salt last year. I found myself using the boat more in the local fresh water lake for that reason. That isn't the reason I bought the boat. Myself and a friend of mine are planning on keeping our boats in a marina in S. Jersey. We looked at 8 different marinas yesterday all with different amenities and costs. here

For those of you who keep your boats in water I have a few questions. This is the first year I am considering keeping the my boat (any boat of mine) in the water. I trailered my 176 the entire time I owned it I trailered the 189 all last year.

I have anti-fouling paint. I assume I'll have to protect some other items from unwanted growth like the transducer and motor mounts?
I have a full canvas cover that attached to the trailer via straps. I could have that modified to use snaps so the boat is covered while in the water or I could just buy a center console cover?
I plan on keeping the boat for a while. I clean the boat after every trip. Flush the motor etc. What additional maintenance would be required with in-water storage.
I want to keep the boat in as good of a condition as I can. I understand these boats are made to be used but I don't want mine to look abused.
I could pull the boat every so often and do a good scrubbing, cleaning if need be.
