A lot of the people that I know who pull the big boards have switched to spectra, (power pro, tuff line, jerry brown) super braid in 500lb test. The 500lb is about the same diameter as 200lb mono. It is extremly slippery, it stays on the planner reel better as it does not have much of a memory. It is a little more expensive but lasts extremely well, if you break the tow line just once and loose 10 to 15 releases that would more than cover the extra cost. The one down side is that there is little or no stretch, so they use a snubber to help with the shock affect while towing. I believe both the line and the snubbers are available at Amish Outfitters whose products are available at the store maintained by this site. Amish outfitters also have a web based online store.

Went down to the monroe show a last year and ran into one of the captains from brest bay marina. He came out with a release saver in case your planer line breaks. I know of a couple guys at brest bay who have some of the prototypes and they flat out work. So i thought i would pass this on to all the guys using big boards. I bought a pair to use after last year watching one of the guys get his board run over by some hot boat not watching what he was doing and listening to the fight that ensued over the radio.

I was working with a charter captain from the western basin we were talking about switching our planner board line and i asked him what kind of line he perfers and he told me that they use weed wacker line. I thought he was shiting me but he goes on to explain how much easier the ( caribeners ) that you would use for a key chain holding his line releases they slide down this line very easily. Well i started to understand still not 100 percent sure of his story, but i will take his word for it. So my question to all of you is have any of you tried this? If so please let me know . I still have to replace my line , and also what kind and where did you get your line .

Our electric planer board reels and manual reels are very similar in design. They are centered around a 7/16” stainless steel driveshaft and include a 6” solid aluminum reel, variable clutch, aluminum clutch knob, high torque electric motor (modified output shaft), universal mounting bracket and line guide (both easily adjustable in 12 different positions for ultimate versatility), and vee clamps capable of mounting from 7/8” to 1-½” diameter rail (larger clamps are also available upon request) .

Specs for Reel and Clutch Components: The 6” reels come with a 7/16” stainless steel bore to fit the driveshaft. Attached to the shaft is also a heavy duty stainless steel collar which is built for precision adjustments of the clutch (other manufacturers use a thin snap ring which when too much pressure is applied breaks the ring causing the clutch components to rub against the motor housing, thus destroying the unit). Our clutch components use a hard anodize pressure plate and 660 bronze machined clutch pads for virtually no wear on the unit even after years of constant abuse. The clutch knob is also solid aluminum, and unlike plastic knobs, will neither break nor need replaced each season.

Planer Boards have emerged as one of the foremost components for catching fish in the Chesapeake Bay. Trolling larger spreads becomes very workable with a set of boards. The trolling rigs are set out on each side with from 2 to 6 rods on each side. more

Running line storage
Electric cord line spoolers work very well if not spooling on a reel. An old reel to hold planer board line when not in use. Old open face reels work good to store line and keep from getting tangled when retrieving line. This setup is used the same way outrigger lines are stored. They are not intended to reel the boards in, only to store the line. Sorry but the only way to retrieve these boards, is by hand over hand. [links]

Trolling with Boards
Attaching your fishing rigs to the line is fairly simple. Run your trolling rig out to your distance 50’ 100 ‘ . Attaching to the board running line now gets a little trickier. You want the rig to stay at your distance set out. I use Scotty clip to quickly attach my trolling line to the board running line. Letting out the reel line when attached to the running line. I leave my clicker on to avoid a backlash. Let the line out to the distance you feel is comfortable on the running line (see diagram). Set the release and place in rod holder working from outside line to top rod holders, in toward boat.
I use Scotty Clips sold in most tackle shops now with a D-Ring /Carbineer to attach trolling line to the running line of the Board. Quick, easy and consistent. You can use a Rubber band #16 connected with a slip knot in the trolling line and then connected to a metal shower curtain clip or D-Ring/Carbineer clip, which connects to the running line. I found that a 30# fish can stretch a rubber band without breaking.

Boats with T-Tops or hard tops have an advantage. The Board line will have a bow and may drag the water when out any distance. Without a t-top there are planer board poles that serve to raise the level of the board attachment [links]

Generally you want the boards to run safely at 75 to 125 feet from the boat and be able to troll 2 to 5 lines per board

Anglers with small boats have not been able to compete with larger vessels pulling PLANER BOARDS. Things Have Changed. Over the last several years Planer boards have emerged as one of the foremost components for catching fish in the Chesapeake Bay. When used properly, they have many advantages. Most anglers perceive them to be cumbersome and only workable on larger boats. This theory is no longer true. more
