Notable high speeds actually recorded in racing were: 49.1 kn (90.9 km/h; 56.5 mph) by Te Rehutai (in 15 and 19 kn (28 and 35 km/h; 17 and 22 mph)) on 17 December 2020. 50.25 kn (93.06 km/h; 57.83 mph) by Britannia during day 4 of the Prada Cup 23 January 2021. [links]

The fastest monohull sailboat in the world is a needle-nosed ocean racer called V.O. 60. It was designed by Bruce Farr, and is capable of 36 knots. That’s 41.4 mph. here

That being said, the average speed of racing sailboats is 15 knots (17 mph). On the other hand, the average speed of cruising sailboats is 4-6 knots (4.5-7 mph) and can attain a top speed of 7 knots (8 mph).

I suspect that too much power will hurt performance of a Mustang in several ways. A 800-1000 hp car could be difficult to drive in traffic. A little too much pressure on the accelerator could result in massive wheel spin or send a car sideways. A driver may end up holding horses more than pushing them.

Three young engineers from the Swiss engineering school EPFL have decided to design the fastest sailboat over a 500m track and enter sailing history. This speed record is currently hold by Paul Larsen who achieved the average speed of 121km/h over the 500m track. here

Instantaneous speed record The highest speed ever reported is from the crew of Vestas Sailrocket 2 : on 24 November 2012 they recorded a top speed of 68.33 knots in a 25–29-knot wind. Previously, the highest speed ever reported was from the crew of l’Hydroptère. more

04. The Fastest Catamaran
The Spirit of Qatar is the world’s fastest catamaran. It uses twin Lycoming turbines to make a total of 9,000 Hp allowing this catamaran to reach ludicrous speed of 244 Mph (212 Knots). 50 feet long and full of turbine power, the Spirit of Qatar is a real eye catcher.

The official speed record requires a boat to run a full kilometer twice, once in each direction, within one hour according to the U.I.M. (whatever that stands for). Drag boats can’t do that. Even if they could, Ken Warby was clocked at 345mph at the end of one run. The average speed of both runs is used to determine his average speed of 317.6mph.

03. The Fastest Top Fuel Hydroplane
The title of the world’s fastest top fuel hydroplane belongs to a boat known as Problem Child. This boat is just like Top Fuel dragster, except he race on water. Problem Child has hit speeds of 262 Mph (228 Knots), similar to their road-going counterparts, which is just absurd. Like a dragster, it’s powered by an 8,000 hp Hemi V8.

10. The Fastest Submarine
The Soviet K-222 is the world’s fastest submarine… It reached a top speed 51.4 Mph, that’s about 45 Knots… The Soviet K-222 featured a titanium hull and twin 177-megawatt reactors, coupled with two 80,000 horsepower steam turbines… Though officially named, within the Soviet Navy the boat was commonly referred to as the “Golden Fish” because of the color of its titanium alloy hull, but some said the nickname referred to the huge cost of development and construction of the submarine.

08. The Fastest Sail Boat
The Vestas Sailrocket 2 holds the record for the world’s fastest sailboat. It hit a top speed of 75 Mph (64,45 Knots) beating the old record which was only 57 Mph. 75 MPH doesn’t seem like a lot, but for something that lacks an engine, and isn’t being dropped out of a plane, it’s damn impressive.

The third and perhaps most obvious factor of course is wind direction and speed. If you plan a large voyage, for example, an ocean passage, make sure to check the dominant wind and direction for your time of year. You want to make sure to have as much downwind as you can get, and a favorable current as well. This is why most sailors choose to go eastward instead of westward when sailing the world. more

So imagine you need to get to dock in time. It's 50 miles away. You need to arrive at 2100 hours. It's currently 1500 hours. Would be handy to know at what speed you need to sail to make it in time. more

So let's get a little more into detail on sailboat speed. The most important factor in determining the speed is the hull type. I have two rules of thumb for you. The first is: the less of the boat is under water, the faster it goes.

When I try to figure out the duration of whatever sailing trip I have in the making, I always need to know this one thing first: the average speed of a sailboat - especially with long journeys. If you have the same problem, this article is for you.

Great, we have a good general idea of what to expect from our trustworthy vessels. If you want to go deeper, you can try to calculate the maximum hull speed of your own boat. Calculating the maximum speed is actually very simple. Now is the time to get out your calculator. more

Ok, it's mostly a theory of amateur cartographer David Cooke, who discovered the Cook Passage in 2015. It's a straight line running around the Earth from Port Renfrew, B.C to Quebec, without ever touching land. While critics claim it's impossible to navigate in a perfect straight line, it doesn't really matter. It's a cool theory, and it's the longest you can (theoretically) sail straight without touching land. here

In lesser days, women needed to be smuggled onboard. Then, when the passage took longer than expected, they naturally needed to give birth every now and then. On sea, women typically gave birth between the cannons on the gundeck. If the child wasn't claimed by one of passengers or sailors, it was entered in the ship's log as being the 'sonofagun'. more

In 1902, the first ever full-rigged five master was built: the Preußen. It was the only 5-masted full-rigged ship ever built, until the Swedish sail cruise liner Royal Clipper was launched in 2000. [links]

Some say Yacht A isn't technically speaking a sailing yacht. I agree. The second largest yacht is actually the longest REAL sailing yacht. Meet the Black Pearl. She truly is a great yacht, designed to cross oceans under just sail power. At 348' (106 m) it's gigantic, and it's one of the most advanced yachts in the world. here
