When I'm brewing, I'll have the panel going (as I understand it from Kal's design, the max it will be pulling is 23 amps), the lights on, and connected to the outlets will be my two keezers, which are both 7.5cf chest freezers. I don't anticipate running any power tools or any other loads.

I have a sub-panel in my garage fed from a 40 amp breaker in my main 200 amp house panel. The sub-panel is wired with 8 gauge wires.

No, not at all. It's done all the time. The breaker in question (a thirty amp breaker) can, for example, sustain a 300% (90 Amp) load for 5 - 20 seconds. This would be plenty of time to start a motor rated at 30 FLA, for example. [links]

Wiring a double-pole, 40-amp circuit breaker for a central air conditioning system is something that any moderately skilled DIY electrician can accomplish without difficulty. Wiring a 2-pole circuit breaker for an air conditioning system requires working inside the service panel, where the main panel lugs will still be electrified even with the main service disconnect breaker turned off. The main lugs are the two terminals on the main service disconnect breaker. Depending on the make and model panel that you're working with, the main breaker may be located at the top or bottom centers of the panel or at the top or bottom, left- or right-hand side. more

Turn off the main service disconnect breaker. Turn on the noncontact voltage tester and bring it near the cable leaving the service panel. The noncontact tester will beep continuously if there is still power going to the branch circuits and remain silent if the panel is safe to open and work in. If there is still power on the cable, you have turned off the wrong breaker. The proper breaker will be labeled "Main." [links]

Route the white neutral wire to the panel's neutral bar. Shorten the neutral wire as needed to make a neat connection. Strip its end and slip the stripped end through one of the empty holes on the silver neutral bar. Tighten the screw down on the wire.

See an electric dryer installation with a typical 220 Volt electric power cord wiring system. You may find yourself with either a 3-wire or 4-wire electric dryer, or a 3-wire or 4-wire outlet. Lets look a how the electric dryer is wired and what to do if your cord does not match the plug.

Hi Dave
It is precisely as you described. They are two one-pole circuit breakers installed side by side with a tie bar across the handle. The circuit breakers are for the 240V dryer. I still don’t see the model of this circuit breaker which is a product of Bulldog Electric, Code No. 4910-0295 25M-12-53 (Instruction for Electrician). I replaced one and it seemed to work (dryer is working without tripping circuit breaker). Now should I replace the old circuit breaker in series with it or it’s ok to have a new circuit breaker and an old one in series ?
Thanks again for replying

Hi Mit,
Without knowing the exact make and model number of your panel I could not give an accurate answer, and it should be clarified what precisely the Series terminology is referring to. I would think that it has to do with a series configuration where more than one circuit breaker is used for the circuit where two circuit breakers are installed in two locations. The method of installing two 1-pole breakers to be used as a 2-pole 240 volt circuit is legal if a tie bar is installed across the two breaker handles when they are installed side by side and parallel to each other, however due to the style of the Pushmatic circuit breakers that may not be possible, therefore a 2-pole Pushmatic breaker will be required for a 2-pole 240 volt circuit.
I hope this helps,
Dave more

this new breaker would fit in perfectly if the tab was not there. the buss bar would need a notch in it for this to fit

Watch out : as we detail at PUSHMATIC - BULLDOG PANELS there are safety hazards and warnings concerning use of Pushmatic-type circuit breakers that should give pause about replacing or repairing these panels versus replacing them entirely.
