Since the coil is involved in both the primary and secondary side of the ignition system, it’s easy to see why it can very easily be misunderstood, “The coil is an incredible part of the ignition system, if there is any part that resembles a magical black box – it’s the coil.” Ryden explained. The coil is responsible for receiving 12-14 volts and then delivering an output of 15,000 – 20,000 volts depending on your application. here

Many have fallen victim to fighting ignition issues because they don’t properly understand ignition systems and how they work. Instead of constantly fighting this battle or paying someone to work on your ignition, many misfires can be solved by looking back at the basics of an ignition system.

We went to the experts at MSD who offer a ton of ignition educational materials on IgnitionInfo.com to take a close look at the basics of ignition systems. “The basic function of the automotive ignition system is to produce a spark that promotes the combustion of the air and fuel mixture,” explained MSD’s Todd Ryden. “The spark that the ignition produces must arrive in the cylinder at the perfect moment in the combustion stroke and have enough voltage to jump the spark plug gap.”

If you are new to ignition systems and understanding timing, we need to define a few terms that you will see in the next few paragraphs about the timing of an engine. [links]

Advance is extremely crucial to the power your engine is creating. Too little advance can hinder the performance of your engine, while too much advance can cause pre-ignition. This is why you must check the timing at idle and higher RPM to see what the total advance is.

What does a carbon track look like? Take a look at the photos of the image viewer and you'll see what one looks like inside the boot and on the spark plug. here

So, you got spark from all of the spark plug boots and ignition coil boots, but you're still experiencing a misfire condition. Well it could be carbon tracks that have developed on the inside of the high tension wires and ignition coil boots that are diverting the spark to Ground.

Carbon tracks inside the spark plug boot (whether the boot belongs to one of the two spark plug wires or the ignition coil itself) are common occurrences in this type of ignition system. Not only that, but a leaking valve cover gasket will inundate the spark plug tubes with engine oil, causing a misfire too.

If you do find traces/evidence of a carbon track, you've got to replace both the spark plug and the spark plug wire or ignition coil that has the corresponding carbon track on it. Carbon tracks can not be cleaned or removed. [links]

A sure sign of a weak coil is that it produces a weak yellowish or orange-colored spark. A coil, when healthy, should produced a clear and bright bluish-white spark--clearly visible in the daylight--accompanied by a distinct "cracking" sound that is loud. Test the coil spark using a fully charged battery, but only do so if you are aware of the dangers involved, and have a helper to turn the engine. It is probably best to consult with a mechanic or auto expert for spark testing, as this involves holding the spark plug wire with pliers.

A "check engine" light can mean numerous things, one of which is a weak or defective coil pack. If the light comes on, and you can determine that the spark plugs are fine, the coil pack probably needs replacing. [links]

A coil pack is a pack of ignition coil generally located in the top area under the hood, above the engine. Part of a car's ignition system, it is typically box-shaped in appearance, and amplifies the voltage sent to individual spark plugs. There are several ways to determine if your car has a weak coil pack.

One of the earliest signs of determining a weak coil pack is engine misfires, also known as "hard starting." A misfiring engine will cause the car to sound choppy or shake, and can make it feel as if the vehicle is stalling. Also, a decrease in power can be attributed to a failing coil, which will cause a low-spark intensity.

Another way to determine a weak coil pack is just by observing if there is any damage or cracks. Generally, the coil pack is box-shaped, with corresponding coils to fire each cylinder. While a car is running, coils are exposed to heat. A cracked housing on a coil needs to be immediately replaced, as it can expose it to moisture. Look for loose or damaged coil connectors.

You can test coil packs using an OBD II diagnostic scanning tool, or code scanner. It can read error codes with the vehicle's computer, and can diagnose the functionality of the coil pack. All cars built since January 1996 have OBD-II systems. They can be purchased at an auto retailer. You could also contact an auto repair shop or the nearest car dealer with on-site mechanics. here

A coil is susceptible to typical circuit related issues in both its primary and secondary windings, such as open or short circuits or high resistances. These may be caused by the breakdown of its windings (due to excessive thermal or vibration stress) or corroded connections. [links]

The primary coil is connected within the primary circuit. When current flows in the primary circuit, energy builds within the coil’s magnetic field. If the current is quickly removed, the magnetic field rapidly collapses and induces a high voltage in the secondary coil. The high voltage is delivered to a spark plug via a secondary circuit. more
