An entry-level prepaid fractional jet card providing 25 hours of flight time on a light jet will cost between US $145,000 to $165,000. Added to this base price are taxes and specific fees such as Federal Excise Tax, per passenger taxes and fees, and passenger facility charges, plus fuel surcharges.

Additionally, how much is a private jet per hour? You can expect to pay between $1,300 and $3,000 per flying hour on average for this low-cost private jet service onboard a turboprop or executive light jet; $4,000 to $8,000 per flying hour for a mid-size to super-mid-size jet; and $8,600 to $13,000 per flying hour for a large private jet.

Note that the costs are not exactly comparable. The charter quote, for example, covers two pilots, one flight attendant and all handling fees and taxes. The G550 owner would likely have to add $6,000 to possibly more than $10,000 in fees for that trip. There may be additional fees for flying the jet card aircraft outside the U.S. Note also that the owned-aircraft costs include fixed and
variable expenses based on flying 413 hours per year, but the price of the airplane itself is not included. Only the charter quote covers the cost of a flight attendant, which is strongly recommended for this size aircraft. more

What does it really cost to fly privately and how do those expenses compare with the price of airline travel? BJT computed the roundtrip cost of a New York-to-Paris trip for four passengers via airline first class and via a wholly owned and chartered Gulfstream 550. We also obtained jet-card pricing for a Gulfstream GIV-SP or G450 in the Marquis Jet program, which NetJets owns, and a Challenger 604/605 in the Flexjet 25 Jet Card program, operated by U.S. air carrier Jet Solutions. (Marquis and the Flexjet 25 Jet Card program don't offer the GV/G550.) Consultant James Butler of Shaircraft Solutions ran the numbers for the trip in a fractionally owned NetJets G550. more

Airline travel and that charter costs compare favorably with those of jet cards and fractional shares. And because all the private options allow you to carry more than four people, adding more passengers can sometimes make travel by business jet even less expensive than first-class airline travel.

The downsides of purchasing a jet card extends beyond just the initial upfront costs and confusing surcharges seemingly attached to every flight. You’re often restricted to a single type of aircraft with significant upgrade charges for different aircraft. Jet cards are subject to “Peak Period Days” with limited availability, with additional surcharges for these periods. more

In private aviation, Operators are akin to airline carriers such as Southwest or JetBlue which own/manage and operate the actual aircraft. There are over 2,500 certificated private jet charter operators in the United States alone, operating over 10,000 total aircraft.

First, identify the program that offers the most attractive options. Some companies design their membership programs around using a fixed fleet only available to their jet card members, which in addition to exclusivity also provides consistent aircraft types, interior amenities and fleet age. One key disadvantage is that clients are limited to those common options.

In 2010, Paramount Business Jets was the first to offer a fully transparent pricing model for jet card memberships with the Paramount Jet Card Program. From safety standards to aircraft specifics and operator ratings, every detail of the flight – including broker markup and operator wholesale price to the broker – is entirely transparent to the client.

Others design their programs around using multiple operators, which offer greater flexibility but also more varied aircraft types and in-flight accoutrements. There may be significant variance in the amenities, interiors, and the age of the aircraft. Clients do have the option to specify their preferred aircraft age and approve aircraft interiors on a per-trip basis – but the variance will still be there.
