The reality show Below Deck follows a luxury superyacht crew as they make clients' dreams come true on three or four-day charters. The guests are always over the top, sometimes disorderly, and occasionally outrageous, but the real drama happens between the crew members. There is an interior crew known as the Stewards and an exterior crew called Deckhands. These two groups of crew members rarely see each other while on the job, but they have plenty of interesting interactions behind the scenes.

Often, the crew hangs out on the boat between charters and enjoys the amenities usually reserved for the Below Deck guests. There have been flings in the hot tub, and singing on the deck, and lots and lots of drinking. The crew plays just as hard as they work, and they work very hard. When they go out, they enjoy lavish meals and beautiful seaside restaurants (and drinks galore), but who pays for it? more

That was the question du jour on Reddit recently, and a couple of cast members even showed up to help dole out some answers. Caroline Bedol from Below Deck season 6 came to the rescue with all of the tea. Caroline is known for being a cast member who quit between charters because she felt mistreated by Kate Chastain (Chief Stew) and Josiah Carter (2nd Stew). Caroline gave her two days' notice and then refused to work, so Kate Chastain took it upon herself to harass Caroline off the boat. She even set up a loudspeaker with annoying music to try to smoke Caroline out. Caroline eventually left the ship, but not before recounting her harrowing tale to Captain Lee. Despite not making it through the season, Caroline learned the secrets of production and came to Reddit to share. Check out just a little bit of the tension Caroline went through on season 6 below:

The popular Bravo reality series Below Deck hit viewers' TV screens for the first time in 2013. Since then, the show has garnered quite a large following and is currently one of the highest-rated series on the network. After being on for so many years, fans have wondered how much does the cast makes, both for being part of the show and for their regular crew duties. For only working four months out of the year, the cast makes an impressive salary that would have anyone convinced yachting is a good career choice. more

According to Refinery29, the cast of Below Deck makes quite a hefty salary for just doing their jobs working on a superyacht. On a yacht the size of the My Seanna, a second and third stewardess rake in about $5,000 per month, while a chief stewardess brings in around $5,500 to $6,000 per month. As for the chef on the boat, they make about $7,000-$10,000 a month, depending on experience and training. The deckhands usually make around $3,500-$4,500 a month, while a bosun would make a little bit more at approximately $5,000 a month. But don't forget at the end of every charter, the whole crew gets a tip from the guests on the boat. On the seasons of Below Deck, the crew usually brings in around $15,000 per person in tips for about six weeks of work. That's in addition to the crew's regular salary. Plus, the cast on the show does not work a whole yacht season, so it is likely they make more throughout the season as they move from boat to boat. more

On top of the money they make working on the yacht, the crew also gets a small fee for appearing on the show. While the exact number is not known, we are assuming it is at least a few thousand dollars an episode. Plus, most of the crew's food is paid for on the boat, and they get a van to drive them to dinner once their charter is finished.

As for the Captain of the boat, they usually make between $150,000 to $210,000 a year for working on a 185-foot superyacht like My Seanna, assuming the Captain is working full-time. As for the tip, a Captain can make up to $100,000 on top of the salary they are getting if they charter their yacht for the full year. [links]

In addition to their specific duties, all officers of the deck crew stand a navigational watch, which is usually a four hour shift, twice a day. The watch is generally at the same time in both a.m. and p.m. - for example, the First Mate might have the 8-12 watch in the morning and the 8-12 watch at night. more

The Third Mate is another officer of the deck crew, and is specifically responsible for safety. He or she maintains and stores all required firefighting and lifesaving equipment. The Third Mate is also responsible for the upkeep of all safety equipment. more

Cargo ships might have people working exclusively with the cargo and I'm not sure how military ships organize the soldiers.

@anon77224 - The deck crew is generally made up of people who manage things above deck and keep the vessel running. Depending on what kind of ship it is, the deck crew may be the only ones working on the ship, or there may be engineering crew as well. [links]

Another thing to consider about all of these salaries? Tips are not only encouraged on a yacht, but they’re basically expected. According to Boat International, the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association lists 5 to 15 percent of the charter cost as the customary range of tip, which is split up among the crew. Since chartering the Ionian Princess starts at $167,000 per week, that means even for a one-week charter, the crew can expect to share another $8,350 to $25,050.

Any fan of The Real Housewives can tell you that there’s always drama when you’re on a yacht, but it wasn’t until Below Deck started on Bravo that I realized how much drama is going on with the yacht staff. Affairs, fights, smooching, breaking up, egos — you name it, we’ve seen it on Below Deck. While the yacht staff is filming a reality show, they also have a job to do — you know, serving the people who are renting out the yacht, as well as keeping it afloat and making sure everyone on board is safe and sound. Since this is a real job, how much does the cast of Below Deck Mediterranean get paid?

It really all comes down to experience and the size of the boat. According to crew recruitment agency Marincescence, the bigger the boat, the more money each crewmember gets paid. The yacht from Below Deck Mediterranean, the Ionian Princess, is 150 feet long, putting the crew on the higher end of the salary range. You also have to remember that their total earnings might be higher if they have salaries from Bravo for appearing on the series. But since the network does not make those figures public, let’s stick to figuring out what the cast pulls in for their work on the yacht. Here are the most likely salaries for the Below Deck Mediterranean crew.

CrewFinders.com, a yachting website based in Florida, land of the yachts, speculates that a captain’s salary can range from $65,000 a year for a 70-foot boat to over $200,000 for a boat that’s more than 190 feet. If you’re a freelance captain, you can make over $500 a day with the right experience and boat size. For a boat the size of the Ionian Princess, Captain Mark Howard from Below Deck Mediterranean could be raking in $120,000 to $180,000, depending on his experience.

Deckhands bring in a little bit less, just given the fact that most of them have less experience than anyone else on deck. Deckhands are the entry-level jobs of the yacht world, so working on a 150-foot boat, these guys (Jen, Danny, and Bobby on Below Deck Mediterranean) likely bring home anywhere from $40,000 to $52,000 a year. Of course, basically all living expenses are factored in here, so it’s a pretty great deal for everyone.

Because they’re not, you know, driving the boat and are thus not responsible for the safety of everyone on board, chief stews make less than the captain — but it’s not chump change. Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier could be bringing in from $62,000 to $75,000 per year, according to CrewFinders. If she wants to moonlight on random ships, she could pull in $350 or more a day.
