Connect the positive lead of the digital multimeter to the rectifier ground and alternately touch terminals A and C with the negative lead, noting the results. The meter should show continuity between the terminals and the ground. Move the negative lead to ground and the positive lead to terminal A and then terminal C. The meter should show continuity with both terminals, but no continuity to the ground. If the meter shows continuity when you switch the negative lead to the rectifier ground, or if both tests show continuity or no continuity, replace the rectifier. more

The purpose of the rectifier on an outboard motor is to force the current to flow in one direction only, using diodes, which are like one-way electrical valves. The whole purpose behind testing the rectifier is to discover whether there is continuity in the circuit and whether current can flow in one direction or both directions. If the rectifier is working as it should, testing should show continuity in one direction only. here
Connect the negative multimeter lead to terminal B and alternately touch terminals A and C with the positive multimeter lead. If the meter does not show continuity, replace the rectifier. more

Disconnect both battery cables from the battery before beginning the tests. Use a 5/16-inch open-end wrench to remove the nut from the negative battery post and the negative cable. Use a 3/8-inch open-end wrench to remove the nut from the positive battery post and the positive cable. more

With the CDI Regulated Rectifiers, you get the benefits and stability of the regulator, but in the same easy-to-install case as a standard rectifier. CDI’s new line of Regulated Rectifiers fit most Johnson Evinrude engines. Click here to view a full list of the regulated rectifiers we offer. here

Rectifier: A component that converts AC voltage (alternating current) to DC (direct current) voltage. The engine’s stator produces AC voltage and the rectifier converts it to DC voltage in order for it to continuously charge the battery. more

Aaron has been working in the Marine Industry for over a decade and holds certifications for Yamaha and Mercury Marine. It is not uncommon for him to own and be working on at least three different boats at any given point in time!

Now, hopefully, there is a battery switch somewhere in the boat. There should only be a couple of power cables coming directly from the battery. more

Most engineers and people will say that the alternator is better than the stator, because of the higher amperage capabilities. The more power the better, right? That is why most people will say that the alternator is better. Most alternators can produce 90 Amps! Which is a lot.

The best way to test this is with a Digital Voltage Meter , (DVA). Or just a plain old simple voltage meter. What you want to do is put the meter on DC voltage. Then, touch the black (negative) lead to the ground on the battery. more
Yes, the middle of the battery, a boat is a lot different from a car because of the environment that it is in. more
Now switch it to both as you run back and recharge the other battery back to full!
