Other than beginning with your contact information, there is no standard format for a CV. You can start with your education and qualifications, or insert your objective with a concise summary of what qualifies you for the position. You can then detail your work experience, followed by achievements, interests and your references. Chronology is not as important as tailoring the information for a specific purpose. For example, if you are applying for a teaching position, you can summarize all of your teaching experience first even if you held jobs between teaching positions.
CV is an abbreviation for Curriculum Vitae. If a job advertisement asks for a CV, that’s a hint that the employer expects a great deal of life experience and accomplishments, including education, original research, presentations you’ve given and papers or books you’ve had published. It’s common in academic positions but is also suited to other jobs and programs. For most jobs a résumé is adequate. In countries other than the U.S., the term CV is interchangeable with résumé.
Unlike a CV, a résumé is typically one to two pages long and is formatted so a prospective employer can read it quickly. It is very common for all non-academic job seekers, presenting both your work experience and education. If you are a recent college graduate, include a good grade point average and details about any internships. You can list your most recent job first; highlight skills required by a particular job; or use a combination of both. You can also include volunteer positions, particularly if you are a new applicant or have had employment gaps. [links]
Think of a CV as a biography, often taking up to eight pages depending on your experiences and accomplishments. It is standard for academic positions in higher education such as college and university teaching positions. Research-intensive positions may also expect applicants to submit a CV. It’s not just for jobs, however; if you are applying for an internship and have a great deal of experience and accomplishments, showcase them in a CV. This is also true for fellowship and grant applications. more
Ask to see a friend’s or colleague’s CV if you are writing one for the first time. The most important thing to remember is that the information you place up front should be the most important for the CV’s purpose. Remember, you don’t have to write in complete sentences; gapping, or using incomplete sentences, is acceptable. For example, you can write: “ESL teacher, 2009. Developed award-winning curriculum. 100% graduation rate of students to next level.” You should keep your sentence and phrase structure consistent for reading ease.

I quickly learned that dissertation-defending PhDs didn’t have resumes, they had CVs. Unlike the resume, which lists work history and experiences, along with a brief summary of your skills and education, the CV is a far more comprehensive document. It goes above and beyond a mention of education and work experience and often lists—in thoughtful detail—your achievements, awards, honors, and publications, stuff universities care about when they’re hiring teaching staff. Unlike a resume, which is rarely longer than a one-sided single page, the CV can be two, six, or 12 pages—depending on your professional achievements.
If you don’t currently have one, I’d recommend creating the doc just in case. You don’t have to stop everything you’re doing right this second, but the next time you go to modify your resume (a familiar and somewhat ongoing practice, I hope), start building it out. If nothing else, it’ll serve a dual-purpose: Not only can you have it handy if you do ever need it, but you’ll also have a running list of everything you’ve ever accomplished, a.k.a., a master resume to pull from as you tailor your own for specific positions. more
Fortunately, if you’re still confused about where to begin, remember that almost any job you apply to will let you know what you need. It’s not typically a guessing game. When you apply for a job in New York City, or Minneapolis, or Austin, there’ll likely be clear language on what’s required with the application. Begin looking into overseas opportunities, and it’s probable that the application will explicitly state that you need to submit a CV or resume for consideration. more
