Contrary to popular myth, cow and bat urine and DEF are not a thing. The urea used in the manufacture of DEF is synthetically derived from ammonia and carbon dioxide, and urea production plants are often adjacent to other sites where ammonia is produced, such as coal and natural gas refineries.

If a diesel powered truck runs out of fuel, it will not restart after you have obtained some diesel and put it in the tank. A diesel will not pull the fuel from the tank to the engine if the fuel line is full of air. You must first prime the engine with fuel before attempting a successful restart.

If your DEF drops below 2.5%, the light will be a solid amber. If you decide to ignore it, at the point where you run out of DEF, the light will glow solid red. It gets worse. If you ignore the solid red, your vehicle speed will be reduced to a snail’s pace – 5 miles per hour – until you top up the DEF tank. more
California passes ‘first-in-the-world rule’ to ban sale of all new diesel trucks by 2045. By 2045, “every new truck sold in California will be zero-emission,” officials say. “California is an innovation juggernaut that is going electric.

If the reservoir is not replenished with DEF and runs low, vehicle speed will be limited, but as soon as DEF is added, the engine will resume normal speed levels. A prudent measure would be to have a top-off gallon jug of DEF available on each piece of equipment with an EPA 2010 engine with an aftertreatment system. more

Running out of fuel is bad news for your engine, whether you drive a petrol or diesel car. And it gets worse for diesel engines too! Running Out of Diesel. When a diesel engine draws in air instead of fuel, both the fuel pump and fuel injectors can become damaged.

So, I wanted to write a little about what the consequences of that are, how much it costs, and if there are reasons why you should avoid it.
Idling actually causes the buildup of carbon in the engine. A high percentage of idle time will also cause mirror glazing in the cylinder walls. Mirror glazing Is when there is a mirror-like finish on the walls surrounding your pistons. This will cause more oil to pass by the piston rings and create a large amount of blow-by.

This is why several manufactures have idled an idle time out where the engine will automatically shut down after a preset amount of time set by the owner. This can be useful and should be implemented.
When you let an RV run out of diesel fuel, your tank becomes “air bound.” What this means is when you try to restart your engine, your fuel pump begins sucking up nothing but air. That air is going to fill up your entire system, making it difficult – if not impossible – to restart your engine. more

Unfortunately diesel-powered vehicles don’t have that kind of leeway when it comes to running out of fuel. If a diesel-powered RV, truck or other vehicle starts to run out of fuel, bad things happen:

Look in the owner's manual for the location of the fuel primer pump and bleed screw. The pump and screw will be located somewhere near the fuel filter on the engine. The primer pump will be a large push button, rubber bulb or small lever. more

Pump the primer pump until diesel fuel comes out of the loose bleed screw. The primer pump is very small and your fuel line may have a lot of air, so be ready to pump for five to 10 minutes before you see fuel coming out of the bleed screw.
