My question is will I hurt the engine if I run the 50:1 mix that I use for my 1982 Evinrude 35HP through the smaller motor? I'd rather not buy another tank and hose assembly if it can be avoided but I don't want to damage the smaller motor either.
I'm going to go look at a used motor tomorrow to use as a kicker on my rig. If it checks out I'm planning on bringing it home. The seller says it's decaled with a fuel/oil ratio of 100:1 but as I research the engine on the internet I see information that says 50:1?
Yeah OMC recommended 100:1 from 1985-88 only to come out with a bulletin in Sept. of 1988 basically recanting the 100:1 recommendation and going back to 50:1. Your motor will run on 100:1 at idle or slow speeds without any issues at all. But if you run WOT for extended periods then this is where you can run into problems.
Hello.
You have an Evinrude sail/special styling long shaft (20")1984 engine.
The mix is 1:50.It is a two cycle.
If it has electric gear on it is probably a 12 volt starter. If there is a charging unit on it, it is not very strong and it would be a good idea to get a 12 volt deep cycle battery and trickle charge it every time you come off the water.
There are kits available to turn it into a short shaft.
You can check the compression on the cylinders and if that is good you should not worry about how "new" this 1984 is.If it really only has been used for five hours ,you may wish to replace the impeller and make sure the carburator is clean.
Good luck.
Re: Yachtwin 6 hp, year and fuel mixture?
Hi Lj.

From the Model number, your 6 horse is a 1984. Fuel mix is 50:1 or 16oz of oil to 6 gal. of gas. Please explain a little more about the "alternator connection". Where is it? more

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.
If fuel is there, trust me my friend, I've been with Evinrude/Johnson since 1960. that indicates a faulty carburetor. here
Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Make sure that the br*** high speed jet located "horizontally" in the bottom center of the float chamber is perfectly clear, also that the choke is closing properly.
Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.
