I loved the 9.5's when they were new. I don't think I'd buy one now because of the exhaust leaks and parts un-availability. They are simple to do most service on, but a major challenge for the novice if the motor has to be shucked out of the shell. I used to brag that I could do that blindfolded, but probably would have to open one eye now.
On the other had, 9.9's 1974-76 were awful. We couldn't keep them running right out of the box. Maybe that's why there are so many used ones around. People couldn't keep them running long enough to wear them out (. ) more
AFA Marine has test run this motor! The motor performed perfect! This engine idled, accelerated, and ran smoothly. If you are in the market for a 9.5hp, 9.9hp, or 15hp Outboard motor, this motor is a great choice. This motor was compared to Johnson/Evinrude 9.9hp outboards(74-2001 2-stroke) and results were comparable. This would make a great outboard motor for a: Jon boat, gheenoe, canoe, inflatable, raft, sailboat, kicker, portable backup, trolling motor, flats skiff, and any other water craft
It is accessed from below after removing the lower unit. Follow the shift rod up into the mid section where you will see a metal plate with 3 screws. The metal plate holds the rubber boot. Be careful not to dislodge the water tube.

One other area that has several potential leaks is the exhaust cover on the side of the block. You can check that by spraying a little soap and water mix on the cover while the engine is running but still cool. Bubbles will appear. here

You cannot reach all of the bolts on the exhaust cover, but tighten the ones that you can reach.

You could vent the cover just above the carb throat. Should be a clear area there in the insulation.

Sure hope that exhaust gas is the problem if you do that. Are you sure the cover isn't hitting something when you put it on?
