It is a process of removing some material, checking, then removing more material until the rebate has been opened up and planking block lies correctly within it.
It is important to realise that the rebate shape changes along the rabbet line. This is shown in the drawing below; a plank was placed on the rabbet line and aligned with the shape of the hull. The red area shows what needs to be cut out to form the rebate. here
The red area will be cut out enabling the plank to set in the formed pocket which runs the length of the keel and runs into the stem and stern post. Letter ‘A’ denotes the rabbet line, ‘B’ is called the middle line (also known as ghost line, breading line, back rabbet), ‘C’ is the breading line (also known as the back rabbet). Depending who you speak to, these components of the rebate do vary in their name, however, everyone usually agrees that ‘A’ is rabbet line. [links]

But it is more likely that this superstition was created in the British Royal Navy, where idle whistling was forbidden in case it caused confusion with Boatswain’s (or Bosun’s) Call.
A rabbit's foot may bring luck on dry land, but never mention the R-word once you're out at sea. It may be because the Devil might disguise himself as a rabbit. Also, many Westcountry seamen won't say church, pig, fox or cat. more
For those who are desperate to rename their boat – who ironically could be looking to change for superstitious reasons – a renaming ceremony must be carried out to inform the gods, which includes making a sacrifice of champagne or rum to the sea. here
It's not just Friday the 13th that gets a bad press in nautical circles. Fishermen won't set sail on ANY Friday. Why? We think this dates back to various bad vibes surrounding this day of the week, including Jesus being crucified on a Friday. In some communities, a baby born on a Friday was laid on a Bible to ward off bad fortune.
