NOTE: With four-stroke outboards, oil is added directly to the engine crankcase. Four-stroke outboards use straight gasoline in the fuel tank (no oil mix). See your owner’s manual for detailed information on how to fill and change engine oil. here

MAPI Four Stroke Oil and Capacity Information
Four-stroke outboards use 10W-30 or 10W-40 four-stroke motor oil. here

There are a number of factors that can affect the amount of fuel an outboard consumes. Therefore, the figures listed below may vary from what you will obtain in your application. Factors such as weight, hull shape, hull condition, water conditions, etc. can significantly impact fuel consumption. [links]

4-Stroke Outboards
Four-stroke MAPI outboards DO NOT come with engine oil already installed. You must add engine oil before attempting to start your four-stroke outboard for the first time. Failure to do so will result in extensive damage to your outboard. Use only new clean gasoline which has been stored in clean containers and is not contaminated with water or foreign material.

CAUTION:
All 4-stroke engines are shipped from the factory without engine oil.
Recommended break-in schedule will prolong the life of your new outboard and ensure optimum performance. RPM’s should be varied throughout the break-in period without exceeding the maximum RPM limits as shown. We recommend that break-in be performed on the boat.

The team at Wired2Fish has put together this informative video to demonstrate a typical break-in scenario, which is outlined in detail in your Mercury outboard owner’s manual. Failure to follow the engine break‑in procedures can result in poor performance throughout the life of the engine and can cause engine damage. here

The video features a new Ranger Z185 bass boat powered by a Mercury Pro XS 150 outboard, but the procedure is similar for most Mercury outboards. For this particular model, during the first two hours of operation run the engine at varied throttle settings up to 4500 RPM, with one-minute bursts at full throttle every ten minutes. Always warm up the motor thoroughly at idle before running at higher engine speeds. For the next eight hours you can run the motor in standard fashion but never for longer than five minutes at wide-open throttle. As demonstrated in the video, the Mercury VesselView Mobile app can be used to monitor the hours of operation, precise engine RPM, and other key information of any Mercury SmartCraft-capable outboard. Once the hour meter hits the 10-hour mark, the break-in process is complete and you are free to run the engine as you normally would.

The owner of any brand new Mercury outboard motor will find it hard to resist the temptation to immediately drop the throttle and feel the sensation of smooth, unrelenting power. With a new motor, however, it will pay to walk before you run wide open. Exercise a little restraint and follow the break-in procedure devised by Mercury engineers, and your new motor can deliver a lifetime of dependable performance.

Please note, your Mercury outboard owner’s manual will detail the recommended break-in procedure for your engine model. A future engine failure caused by improper break-in may not be covered by the Mercury warranty, so it’s well worth the time and effort to get your new rig thoroughly broken in the right way.

You can use the "shift switch activation procedure", but by doing this, the outboard resets to break-in mode, which means you will be using a bit extra oil for the break-in period. I would recommend you have the oil pump primed by a dealer with DDT or CDS software to avoid the break-in mode. However, if this is inconvenient: here

Is there a way to prime the system without the use of a DDT?

I recently changed my air compressor and need to prime the oil system to ensure the air compressor has oil in it.
