PFSA is an essential and integral part of developing and updating Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP). The CG or the RSO, who must have appropriate skills, carries out PFSA. It must be periodically reviewed and updated taking into account any fresh security threats or changes in the port facilities.
SSA shall be documented, reviewed, accepted and retained by the company.

PFSO/ Master or SSO of interfacing ships should acknowledge the DoS. DoS should address the security requirements to be shared between ship and port. CGs should specify the minimum period of the DoS for the port and the ship. Proper use of the DoS is important, not only as a means of coordinating security arrangements between ships and port facilities but also as a method of documenting appropriate implementation of the ISPS Code and related maritime security requirements. more

SSO is the person on board the ship, accountable to the master, designated by the company as responsible for the security of the ship, including implementation and maintenance of the ship security plan, and for liaison with the CSO and PFSO. Every ship must have a designated SSO. [links]

‘First, the visiting vessel must have on board a Ship Security Plan approved by the authority that registered the ship, and the port must have a port facility security plan, as approved by the Contracting Government,’ said Captain Fakapelea. [links]

‘Before a vessel arrives, it sends its security pre-arrival information to the port, including the security status of the ten ports previously visited.’
Captain Fakapelea explained that the implementation of the two security plans is agreed between the ship’s security officer and the ports facility security officer, with each having clearly designated areas of responsibility.
Increasing global awareness of the threat of terrorism means Pacific Island countries and territories must ensure they comply with the International Ship and Ports Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
‘The SPC Transport Programme has audited most ports in Pacific Island countries according to this international convention. To maintain compliance status is an on-going challenge,’ said Captain Hakaumotu Fakapelea, Regional Maritime Ports Security Adviser with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community’s (SPC) Transport Programme.

Captain Fakapelea said that the SPC auditing system was introduced to assist countries after the ISPS code came into force in 2004. The code is part of the amendments made to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, through the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and its member countries, to safeguard and protect ships and ports in the course of carrying out international trade. more
Some companies may have a quick checklist for review of ship security plan. Even if there is no checklist, SSO can review the SSP to best of his capacity.

It is quite obvious that to implement SSP on board, SSO must himself know about what SSP requires from SSO and ship’s crew.
Can u pls explain the scenario of actions to be taken when the ship has lower security level than the port it is approaching?. What all things need to be done? [links]
Ship security assessment is a kind of risk assessment about the security of the ship.
